Route Summary
This route describes a round trip from Las Vegas through Red Rock Canyon to Leak Mead and the Hoover Dam.

My wife and I rode this route in 2004 on our honeymoon on a rented Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail.

The route is easy to drive with a motorcycle or car. There are no challenging passes or bends and you drive partly on the highway through the Mojave Desert.

The views along the way are beautiful and the sights give this tour 4 stars.

RouteXpert Review
For this tour from Las Vegas you can rent a motorcycle from EagleRider in Las Vegas or a rental car, which you can rent at the airport or from one of the many rental companies in the city.

Make sure you bring enough fluids, preferably with electrolytes (e.g. Gatorade and Powerade), you can buy these at every supermarket and gas station. You are driving through the desert and lose a lot of fluid.
We first drive to the “Welcome to Las Vegas Sign” to take a picture. You can park at Harley-Davidson on the right, it is a short walk from there, but be careful: it can be busy. At the end of the route you can take another picture in the dark.

We drive along Las Vegas Boulevard, better known as “The Strip”, where we marvel at the impressive casinos on both sides, such as the New York New York (our hotel this trip) with its roller coaster, the MGM, The Paris and the famous Bellagio with its beautiful fountains.

It is about a half hour drive to the “Red Rock National Conservation Park”. The park offers besides the scenic drive also hiking trails, plants and wildlife, geology, camping, cultural resources and much more.
In the visitor center at the entrance you can get information and explanations about recreational possibilities. The visitor center also has indoor and outdoor exhibitions and a book and gift shop.
We drive the “Red Canyon Scenic Drive”, a 13 mile long, one way scenic drive through this beautiful park, entrance for a motorcycle is $ 10, - and for a car $ 20, -. Along the way you can enjoy beautiful views, along the route there are several parking places to stop and take pictures.

We leave the park and drive towards Henderson, on the way there is enough opportunity to stop for lunch. From Henderson drive via Boulder City to the Hoover Dam. We drive over the Hoover Dam (watch out for pedestrians) to the parking lot with a beautiful view of this impressive concrete colossus. At the Hoover Dam is a visitors center where you can watch a film about the history of this dam, they also provide guided tours. Tickets cost between $ 10 and $ 30, depending on the tour you choose. There are several parking lots where you have a beautiful view of the dam.

We drive back over the dam via the same road to then drive the Lakeshore Road, this beautiful 12 mile long road through “Lake Mead National Recreation Area” is considered the “Main Street”. There are many more beautiful routes, but this is the oldest and most used road in the park and has a variety of views and attractions. Entrance to the park costs $ 25, - (for 7 days access).

Visit the Lake Mead Visitor Center, where rangers and volunteers will help you plan an unforgettable trip. In addition to picking up maps and brochures, you can visit the exhibit hall to view a large relief map of the entire park, learn about the animals, and watch the park’s award-winning film, “Life in the Desert.” The store is stocked with books about the park and region, Native American art, jewelry and crafts, posters, outerwear, postcards, and maps. Enjoy the ride, there are multiple parking lots where you can stop to enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Mead and its surroundings.

We drive back to Las Vegas, where we visit Fremont Street in old Las Vegas, where you can visit the famous casinos like the Golden Nugget and 4 Queens. There is a lot to do on Fremont Street, there is a Zip-Line, live music, bars, restaurants and of course hotels to stay overnight.
We drive back over the strip, this time after sunset so a great light show. Definitely plan a stop at the famous Bellagio to see the fountain spraying to music and light show. We take another photo at night of the illuminated “Welcome to Vegas Sign” before we drive back to our hotel.
