Route Summary
This route takes you through the heart of Georgia, from the historic valleys of Imereti to the rugged peaks of the Greater Caucasus.
You'll begin in Kutaisi, a city with a soul harking back to ancient times. Just outside the city lies the Gelati Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site with medieval frescoes so vibrant you'll almost forget they're centuries old.

Via the industrial town of Tkibuli, beautifully situated between the mountains and the Shaori Reservoir, you reach Ambrolauri. This is the capital of the Racha region, home of Khvanchkara wine. In nearby Chrebalo, you can literally taste the local wine traditions. The route becomes even more spectacular as you enter the Lechkhumi region, notably the Sairme Pillars, gigantic natural limestone columns that rise like sentinels from the greenery. A worthwhile excursion is to the village of Lailashi, with its Jewish heritage and a "secret" pool (the Ghezhu spring) offering breathtaking panoramic views. Near Tsageri, the ruins of the Orbeli Fortress have guarded the passage to the mountains for centuries.

From Lentekhi, you slowly leave civilization behind. The road leads through Lower Svaneti, passing through authentic hamlets like Shtvili, Durashi, and Zegani. This is Georgia at its purest: stone houses, grazing cattle, and absolute silence.

The ultimate reward comes at the Ughviri Pass. From here, you'll have breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus before descending to Mestia. Here, you'll be greeted by the iconic Svan towers, which stand like stone exclamation marks in the landscape.
This is a ride you will never forget and therefore rated 5 stars.

NB:
Some sections of the mountain pass are unpaved or poorly paved. Therefore, caution is advised!

RouteXpert Review
This tour takes you through one of Georgia's most spectacular and geographically diverse regions. You'll travel from the historic lowlands of Imereti to the hidden valleys of Racha and Lechkhumi, finally ending among the snow-capped five-thousanders of Svaneti. This isn't your typical tourist route; it's a journey past forgotten fortresses, sacred monasteries, and the raw beauty of the Caucasus.

Kutaisi
Your journey begins in Kutaisi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The city exudes a friendly atmosphere with its whitewashed houses and the famous Bagrati Cathedral, which stands guard on a hill overlooking the city. Visit the central market for local herbs and churchkhela (Georgian Snickers) before leaving the city.

Gelati and Motsameta Monasteries
Just outside Kutaisi lies the Gelati Monastery (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). In the Middle Ages, it was not only a religious center but also an academy. Its frescoes are among the best preserved in the entire Caucasus. Don't forget to make a short stop along the way at the nearby Motsameta Monastery, spectacularly situated on a cliff above a bend in the Çkhaltsitela River.

The Climb to Racha
As you leave the monasteries further and further behind, you'll notice the landscape slowly changing from rolling hills to densely forested mountainsides. The road begins a serious climb here towards Tkibuli. This town has a fascinating, somewhat melancholic, Soviet-industrial character due to the coal mines. Shortly after Tkibuli, you'll cross the Nakerala Pass. Stop here at the viewpoint; on a clear day, you can see the entire Imereti Plain as far as the horizon. Immediately after the pass, you'll be greeted by the turquoise waters of the Shaori Reservoir, surrounded by dense forests that seem to be ablaze in autumn.

Ambrolauri (coffee break)
Before reaching Ambrolauri, you'll pass Nikortsminda Cathedral. This 11th-century architectural masterpiece is famous for its intricate stone carvings on the exterior. Originally built in the early 11th century, the cathedral is over a thousand years old. Much of what visitors see today, including the breathtaking frescoes adorning the walls, dates from later restorations in the 16th century. The bell tower was added in the 19th century. There are several coffee spots in front of the cathedral. Once in Ambrolauri, the capital of the Racha region, everything revolves around Khvanchkara wine. You'll immediately recognize the town by the enormous monument in the shape of a wine bottle in the central square. It's the perfect place to try local cuisine, such as lobiani (bean bread) with smoked ham.

Lechkhumi
You leave Racha and drive along the Rioni River to Chrebalo, a village known for its excellent wineries and microclimate. But the real natural spectacle begins shortly afterward at the Sairme Pillars. These gigantic, vertical limestone formations shoot up from the forested mountains. A hike to the foot of these pillars will make you feel like you've stepped into a Game of Thrones setting.

Lailashi (optional)
A path winds up from the main road to Lailashi. This mountain village is famous for the Okronishi Spring, a stone pool of icy mountain water. What makes this place unique is the "secret pool," or "no one knows where it is" experience: while soaking in the water, you look out over the deep valleys of Lechkhumi. It's one of the most photographed spots in the region, yet retains its serene tranquility. Lailashi is also the village known for centuries as an important center for Georgian Jews and a model of peaceful coexistence between various ethnic groups (Georgians, Jews, Greeks, and Armenians). Culturally, the village is especially renowned for the Lailashi Codex, a very rare and ancient Hebrew manuscript. The old synagogue and the Jewish cemetery are well-known.

Tsageri
The route continues towards Tsageri, passing the Lajanura Reservoir. Near the village of Orbeli, you'll see the ruins of the Orbeli Fortress perched on the rocks. This fortress once guarded the strategic passages between the regions. Also near Tsageri is the sacred Mount Khvamli. According to legend, this was the place where Prometheus was chained to the rocks by the gods. The mountain's vertical walls are impressive and dominate the landscape.

Lentekhi (lunch break)
After Lentekhi, civilization as you know it fades a bit. This is the last place to refuel and stock up on supplies. So, lunch! The atmosphere here becomes noticeably wilder. You're now officially entering Lower Svaneti, a region that's much less touristy than the upper reaches, but just as beautiful.

Shtvili, Durashi and Zegani
The road from Lentekhi to Mestia via the back door (the Zagari Pass route, which is often accessed through these villages) is an adventure in itself. Shtvili and Durashi are small settlements where time seems to have stood still. Here you'll see the first Svan stone houses. Zegani lies deep in the Tskhenistskali River valley. Here you'll experience the isolation of the mountain people; farming is still entirely manual, and the hospitality is legendary. The road here is often unpaved and challenging, but the views of the glaciers in the distance make up for everything.

Ughviri Pass
After a long climb, you reach the Ughviri Pass. This is a crucial point on the route. From the top of the pass, you have a phenomenal view of the peaks of Tetnuldi and the iconic twin peak of Ushba. In autumn, the slopes here are covered with golden birch trees, creating a stunning contrast with the snow-capped peaks.

Mestia (end point)
Finally, you descend into the Mestia Valley, the heart of Upper Svaneti. Mestia is famous for its dozens of Svan towers (koshki), medieval defense towers belonging to almost every house. Mestia boasts several interesting sights, such as the Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography: One of the best museums in Georgia, it boasts an astonishing collection of icons and manuscripts that were hidden here from invaders for centuries. Margiani's House-Museum: Here you can see how a traditional Svan family used to live, including the internal stable and sleeping quarters around the central fire. Hatsvali Lift: Take the cable car to the mountaintop for a beer with the best view of the Ushba.

Georgia
Georgia is a destination that awakens the senses and nourishes the soul. Situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, this country offers a rare combination of unspoiled nature, deep spirituality, and a culinary tradition that elevates every meal to a ceremony.

Your adventure undoubtedly begins in Tbilisi, the vibrant capital where futuristic glass architecture stands side by side with the iconic wooden balconies of the old town. The city exudes an atmosphere of creativity and history, especially in the wine bars where the 8,000-year-old winemaking tradition is still very much alive. A short distance away lies Mtskheta, the spiritual epicenter of the country. As the ancient capital, it is home to a UNESCO World Heritage site that brings Georgia's early conversion to Christianity to life. For the true history buff, Dmanisi is an absolute must; it is here that the oldest human remains outside of Africa have been discovered, giving the region an almost mythical status as the "cradle of Europe."

Traveling west, you'll find Kutaisi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and the ideal base for exploring spectacular caves and monasteries. For those who want to fill their lungs with pure mountain air, Baryumi (Borjomi) is the perfect stop. This historic spa town, world-famous for its healing mineral waters, serves as a gateway to dense forests and vast national parks.

The true visual spectacle, however, lies in the Greater Caucasus. Kazbegi offers the country's most iconic image: the Gergeti Trinity Church, which stands out boldly against the mighty, snow-capped peak of Mount Kazbek. For an even more rugged and authentic adventure, head to Mestia in Svaneti. This area is known for its unique medieval defense towers and offers access to the region's highest glaciers.

In the south lies the surreal Vardzia, a vast cave city carved out of the rock in the 12th century. This labyrinth of passageways and chapels is an architectural marvel. However, if you're looking for modern relaxation, Batumi on the Black Sea coast is the place to be. This city combines a subtropical climate with bold skyscrapers and a vibrant coastal nightlife.

End your journey in the east, in romantic Sighnaghi. Perched on a hill in the Kakheti wine region, this fortified town overlooks the endless Alazani Valley. With its cobbled streets and abundance of wine cellars, it's the perfect place to raise a glass to a land where a guest is always considered "a gift from God."
