RouteXpert Review
Bastogne (French: Bastogne, German: Bastenach, Luxembourgish: Baaschtnech) is a city and municipality in the Belgian province of Luxembourg. The city has more than 15,000 inhabitants, which are called Bastogne. Bastogne was best known for the Battle of Bastogne, during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. After the Allied armies had liberated most of Belgium, parts of the German Wehrmacht (and especially SS) committed a desperate offensive towards the Meuse. Bastogne, defended by the American 101 Airborne Division led by General Anthony McAuliffe, was surrounded by the German army for three weeks. The Americans held out. When a German negotiator came to ask him to surrender, McAuliffe replied "Nuts!" what in American English means so much as "nonsense!" Since then the city has been nicknamed Nuts City.
