RouteXpert Review
The Taunus Mountains: The Taunus is a low mountain range in the German state of Hesse, belonging to the Rhineland Slate Plateau. It is bordered by the Rhine in the west, the Wetterau in the east (as part of the Hessian rift, a spur of the Upper Rhine River), the river Lahn in the north and the river Main in the south. The highest mountain of the Taunus is the Großer Feldberg with 878.5 meters.
The climb of the Loreley is a tourist activity. There is a viewpoint on the rock.
History:
In history, many ships crashed at the Loreley. The Rhine is here at its narrowest (only 113 meters), but with 25 meters also at its deepest. In addition, there is a dangerous current. Although the most dangerous parts of the Loreley were already removed in the thirties, shipping is also being warned even before the passage. In January 2011 an accident with a ship with 2400 tons of sulfuric acid caused major problems.
According to legend, nymphs would once have lived around the Rhine. When people began to populate the banks, however, they were chased away. Only one nymph was left behind. She could not bid farewell to the Rhine and settled on the high rock, from where she had sight over the whole river. With her beautiful, sad singing, her beauty and her long golden hair, she managed to enchant the skippers, who lost their attention to their ships and walked through the strong current on the rocks (the same story motif can be found in the legends of the Sirens from the Odyssey). Many lost their lives here. One day a young knight, the son of Count Palatinus, wanted to see the girl from close by. He decided to take a trip to the rock with his squire, but, like so many before him, he was enchanted by her singing. He died when his boat hit the rocks too. However, the squire managed to save himself and brought the sad news to the count. Full of anger and grief gave his men the assignment to throw the nymph off the rock, so that she would drown like all her victims. When the nymph saw the count's men approaching, she threw her necklace into the water and sang another last song. Then large waves emerged from the Rhine that carried her away, whereupon the nymph disappeared eternally.
This legend also formed the basis for many other stories. At the bottom of the Loreley is a statue of the nymph. (Source: Wikipedia)
