RouteXpert Review
This tour takes you through several beautiful parks on the border between Portugal and Spain. We depart from the campsite and head south through the Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede, a beautiful green area with exceptionally beautiful views from the higher elevations.

You will be staying at Camping Beirã-Marvão in Alentejo, Portugal. This campsite is located on the border with Spain and is run by Dutch people.

The campsite, the starting point, is located in the Portuguese Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, the undiscovered part of the unexpectedly uniquely beautiful Northern Alentejo region of Portugal. It also lies within the Tagus International Natural Park.

The first stop is after about 10 kilometers in the town of Marvão, where we stop to visit the beautiful sights. As you approach the town, there are several small parking areas, from which you can easily walk to the village. Marvão, also known as the Eagle's Nest, is situated at an altitude of 856 meters on a granite cliff, on one of the peaks of the Serra de São de Mamede. Marvão is completely walled and located in the Alto Alentejo region, near the Spanish border, which was once guarded from the village. Marvão's imposing granite ramparts blend seamlessly into the landscape, blending seamlessly with the rocky ridge.

Marvão is lined with dazzling white houses and is an ideal spot to enjoy a remarkable panorama of the plains and mountains. Just outside the village lies Castelo de Marvão, formerly a strategic detention fortress facing the border, just 13 km away. It also served as an effective refuge and an exceptional observation and surveillance point, as it was clearly the second main route of penetration for the armies of the neighboring country, Valencia de Alcântara, in a vast area of the Alto Alentejo that flows from Badajoz to the Tagus River. A beautiful castle from which you have a magnificent view of the vast area.

After this lovely stop, we're really going to enjoy the ride. We'll take the N359, a lovely, wide two-lane road to Portagem, another lovely village worth stopping in. A dam has been created in the Sever River to create a beautiful natural swimming pool where you can relax in the fresh, clean water. There are picnic tables and several restaurants nearby.

Shortly after Portagem, we turn left onto the M521, which meanders delightfully through the beautiful Nature Park. After about 7 kilometers, you'll reach a roundabout where you turn right and continue on the M522. After about 2.5 kilometers, continue straight onto the M1044-2, a lovely narrow road between orchards. Note that the road surface is somewhat less than perfect here, but the scenery is all the more beautiful. You'll drive through rugged terrain with the occasional typical Portuguese white house or farmhouse, and many trees dot the beautiful, fresh, green hills.

In Alegrete, we stopped to visit Castelo do Alegrete, which offers spectacular views. The "historic center" is also very charming, with its small blue-and-white church.

We're now driving the last few kilometers in the southern part of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park towards the Spanish border. This section is relatively flat, expansive with green meadows and orchards. Everything is fenced off, so it's no longer easily accessible.

In Spain, the landscape is expansive, with abundant orchards and vineyards. We continue our pleasantly winding journey to the Villar del Rey dam, where the Sierra de San Pedro enters. This is a virtually uninhabited area with abundant trees. Many rare birds also breed in this area, and with a bit of luck, you'll spot Spanish Imperial Eagles, black vultures, black storks, kestrels, and golden eagles.

After a scenic drive, you'll arrive in Alburquerque, a charming town with a square lined with restaurants and a castle perched on a hill at the edge of town. This castle, "Castillo de Luna," is definitely worth the hike up, as it offers stunning views of the town and its surroundings.

We leave Alburquerque and drive back to Portugal on the EX-110 via San Vicente de Alcántara and Valencia de Alcántara. The last part of the journey to the campsite is through the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park.
