Route Summary
That France is one of the most beautiful and best touring countries is beyond doubt. It offers an incredibly varied landscape with good roads and a pleasant climate. It is not for nothing that you see so many motorcyclists there. My previous series of routes in France were based on the route descriptions from the Motortourgids France part 1 made by Bert Loorbach.

This route comes from Motortourgids France part 2 and the original name is "Auvergne Route description 2: The mountains of the Cantal".

In Motorbike guide France part 2 a difference has been made between approach routes and trips in a certain area. The approach routes can also be used in combination with the routes from Motortourgids France part 1

The routes are sometimes slightly adjusted based on the tips that Bert Loorbach gives in his description, or because of a different place to spend the night, or to achieve the minimum length of 2 hours for the MRA Library. For each route there is a more detailed description in the review, including options to stay overnight or places of interest en route, which are also indicated with a POI and if possible with a short description

The route is made suitable for Garmin, TomTom, Harley-Davidson BoomBox 2019 and Navigation App, can be downloaded for free and without My-Route-app registration. To do this, first click on the 'Use route' button and then on 'Save as'.

RouteXpert Review
This is a short introduction to the Auvergne area where routes 9, 10 and 11 are mapped out.
In this landscape where the volcanoes play the leading role is the unique landscape shaped by the Magma. This is very different from the Alps or the Pyrenees that were caused by the severe earthquakes.

Motorcycling is an experience here, which you can do best in this area from June to September. Because of the craters, the unspoiled landscape and the clear sky, you have the feeling of going back in time.
There is no end to great curves here! There are many campsites and sufficient campsites in this area, so finding a place to stay should not be a problem.
The review shows the links of the other two routes in this area.

This is the review of the second route from a series of three that meanders through the Auvergne. The route has been slightly modified, the original route is 1 hour and 46 minutes drive and starts in Bort-les-Orgues, just south of our starting point the Camping Huttopia Lac de la Siauve on the shores of Lake Bort-les-Orgues. I also added a stretch of about 80 kilometers through the volcanic plateau of Le Cézallier, which is also described in the book.

Our first stop is only 5 kilometers from the Château de Val (RP2), a castle that was built in the 15th century and has been perfectly preserved. It is proud of its own small peninsula that protrudes into the lake formed by the creation of the hydroelectric dam of Bort-les-Orgues and its reflection in the quiet water shows how elegant the building is.
After this short stop a promising journey begins, we drive on the D49 through a beautiful gorge with wooded slopes, rocky walls, beautiful curves and narrow bridges over rivers. At the village of Champs-sur-Tarentaine-Marchal we turn right and take the D679 to Coindre, this road follows from Sarran the contours of the river La Rhue, so this is a true bend-off through beautiful nature.
We continue to Coindre, where we turn left after the bridge and drive to Condat on the north side of the reservoir.

Once in Condat (RP9) we are at the gateway to the volcanic plateau of Le Cézallier, also known as the "little Scotland of Auvergne" and in the heart of the Auvergne volcanic regional nature park. High above sea level, these plateaus were given their round, bumpy shape by glaciers. The huge group of granite plateaus, rising between the Monts-Dore and the Monts du Cantal, is dominated by the Signal du Luguet with its peak at 1551 m. Traditionally, this arable land was the home of cows feeding peacefully in the grass. This deserted area is a plateau at more than 1200 meters where a basalt layer covers the granite. The area is so flat because the lava was very thin and could easily spread out over the landscape. The sky is clear, the horizons are spacious and there are almost no people.

Those who are also fascinated by Scotland should definitely choose RP9 to stick the large loop of about 80 kilometers through this beautiful green and flat area to the route. In Condat we turn left and take the D536 which becomes the D36, “Col de Chamaroux” to Boutaresse (RP12) where we take D721 to Anzat-Ie-Leguet (RP13), there we take the D23 that through the rolling green landscape swings.
At RP14 you drive the Col de Fortunier a nice narrow road with a nice view.
At RP16 we turn left onto the D21 direction Condat, you can also take the D679 right here via Marcenat to Condat, but the D21 that later becomes the D16 is nicer to drive. In both cases you will return to the original route to Riom-es-Montagnes at RP18.

Riom-es-Montagnes (RP20) lies on a bump on the river Limagne and is recommended to plan a break here so that we are fit for the next beautiful stage of this ride.
After lunch we drive via the D3 and D62 to one of the highlights of this route; the "Pas de Peyrol" (RP22), the highest pass of the Massif Central with 1582m, with a beautiful view of the "Cirque de Falgaux". Here you will also find the "Puy Mary", which is part of the Monts du Cantat. It is a tough walk from the Peyrol to the summit that is 1787 meters high, but you will be rewarded with a fantastic view over the mountain tops and valleys.

From here the original route goes to the Salers terminus. But we drive back via the D22 along the river Le Mars to the Camping Huttopia Lac de la Siauve. On this last part you will also be treated to beautiful winding roads and beautiful panoramas.

This route is worth 5 ***** stars, the roads and the surroundings are beautiful and there is plenty to see along the way. You can also see some beautiful towns and of course the Puy Mary.
