RouteXpert Review
Achill Island Achill is the largest island in Ireland. It is located on the west coast, in the county of Mayo, and is connected to the mainland by the Michael Davitt Bridge. About 87% of the island consists of unexplored peat soils, especially between Blacksod Bay and Clew Bay. There are many times more sheep than people.
We start the trip across the island via the east side where we drive around the Doogart Bog, a slightly sloping peat area where you can still see peat cutters at work. On the north side are some white beaches, also here is the Anchor restaurant (RP6) for coffee or lunch.
Further on at RP7 we find the Slievemore Deserted Village & Graveyard, perhaps a moment to stretch our legs and reflect on the past, present and future.
Via a steep road and through a beautiful environment in the mountains we arrive at Keem Bay (RP8). It is part of the wild antlatic way. A nice quiet beach, between beautiful rocks and cliffs and beautiful views.
Returning from Keem Bay you see a beautiful panorama with a view of the cliffs of Achill Island.
Tip! At RP9 in Keel, which you will pass both on the way and back to Keem Bay you can eat excellent fish
You can easily reach the above mentioned 450 meter high cliffs by car / motorcycle on the road that goes from Cashel South towards Mweelin and right up (RP10). If you walk a bit, you come to a statue of Maria and you have a beautiful view (RP11).
Then we continue via the south-west side of the island, past beautiful views and many remains of old castles. At RP13 there is an open garden, De Secret Garden. The Dutch couple has created a beautiful little oasis of peace where you will be received with love. A walk of about 20 minutes through the garden and. a cup of coffee and you can go back again.
Via the Achill Sound we reach the mainland of Ireland, where on RP14 you can enjoy the view of the Inishcottle Archipelago towards Westport
Keem Bay
Around Dogart Bog
