RouteXpert Review
Get on and be surprised by the Ommelanden, where the Groningen countryside shows itself from its most beautiful side. Narrow roads, winding canals and dikes full of history guide you through a landscape that has stood for centuries. You drive through age-old terp villages, past mills and through characteristic villages where time seems to stand still. Here you experience the pure tranquility of the north, interspersed with surprising sights. This is a route for lovers of nature, history and good driving.

You start the route at Roesd in Tolbert, a special art shop with a cozy coffee corner. From here you drive straight into the peace and quiet of Groningen, towards Boerakker and Oldekerk. The first kilometers take you over narrow, quiet roads between the vast fields and farms. Here you immediately feel why the Ommelanden are so unique. The route winds further along the Van Starkenborghkanaal, an important waterway in the North of the Netherlands. You get a beautiful view of the canal and the passing inland vessels, as you set course for Grijpskerk. Then you turn towards the Reitdiep area, one of the oldest cultural landscapes in the Netherlands. Here you drive past old terp villages such as Ezinge, where you will find the Museum Wierdenland. This museum tells the story of the terps - the centuries-old residential hills that protected the inhabitants from the water. A fascinating look into the history of this region. The route takes you further to De Theefabriek in Houwerzijl, a wonderful place for a short break. In this former church you can discover everything about tea and enjoy a freshly brewed cup with home-made delicacies.
After the break, you head north and ride along the Reitdiep, a winding waterway that used to be the connection between Groningen and the Wadden Sea. Here you will also find Zoutkamp, an atmospheric fishing village where the influence of the sea is still palpable.
Via the quiet roads of the Hogeland you drive towards Leens, Warfhuizen and Saaksum, where you experience the real Groningen countryside. The route takes you further to Roderwolde, where you can stop at the Oil and Corn Mill Woldzigt. This monumental mill is unique because it both grinds grain and makes oil from linseed - a craft that is still held in high esteem here. The last kilometers take you through Roden and Nietap, after which you end the day at Hotel De Postwagen in Tolbert. Here you can enjoy the ride with a drink or a hearty meal in a historic building with a rich history as a post office.

The Ommelandroute is a ride for lovers of peace, history and characteristic villages. With about 85 kilometers of country roads, dikes and old trade routes, this route lets you experience the purity of Groningen. Whether you enjoy the wide views, the charming villages or the historical sights, this ride has something to offer for every motorcyclist.
