Kempenroute
The Kempen region is replete with the smell of smallholdings, barren land, and poverty (Van Gogh's "Potato Eaters"). The fact that this image of the past is no longer true is quickly apparent in the typical Brabant long-gabled farmhouses: all windows and doors on one long side, the roof thatched except for the lowest (tile) edge.
The landscape also looks lush, with forests and farmlands intersected by rivers and canals such as the Dommel, the Beerze, and the Wilhelmina Canal. You start in Oirschot, the "Monument in the Green," and travel along country roads to Best, Sint-Oedenrode, and Breugel. The Dommel River winds through the landscape as you pass through village after village, each with its own story and character. The route continues through Nuenen and Mierlo, with views of the Strabrechtse Heide, after which you discover a piece of the Peelrand in Lierop. Here, a delicious break awaits at Boscafé van Moorsel. Then, it heads south towards Leende and on to Hamont-Achel, known for the Achelse Kluis (Achel Hermitage). Back in the Netherlands, Borkel awaits with a pleasant stop at Grand Café De Zwaan. Afterward, you drive through Eersel, one of the Eight Beatitudes, and via Vessem you reach Middelbeers, where Lunchroom Meesterlijk offers the perfect place to end the day.
The Kempen Route is a relaxed, varied day trip where nature, history, and gastronomy go hand in hand. Perfect for motorcyclists who want to discover the charm of the Kempen region, without rushing, but with plenty of excitement.
