Route Summary
This route collection along the Dutch Country Houses & Castles consists of 14 routes.
These country houses and castles have been used as a framework to plot the beautiful routes, but the routes remain worthwhile even without visiting the described objects. But of course the route has added value if you stop here and there and take a walk. Not all manors and castles are open to visitors, but these can be spotted from the public road or their garden or park is open to visitors.
The route is for the most part on country roads, the busier N-roads and urban areas are avoided as much as possible. The length of the routes has been kept below 175 km, partly because the average speed will not be that high on many 60 km of roads.
Almost every province has one or more routes, only in South Holland and the Flevopolders no routes have been set out because there were no country houses and castles there that were eligible for this tour due to their location.

Starting point: Cafe 't Veerhuis, Schouwen-Duiveland
End point: Baarland Castle, Baarland (Borsele)

RouteXpert Review
Skip South Holland for a while, there is something to be found there, but almost all of them are in city parks or in very urban areas! Zeeland does have some country houses and castles and a number of them are included in this route! We start in a cafe in Bruinisse on Schouwen-Duiveland and go to the village of Schuddebeurs where you pass the country house Mon Plaisier.

Buitenplaats Mon Plasir, Donkereweg 72, 4317 NM Schuddebeurs (Noordgouwe)
Around 1750 the house was renovated by mr. Anthonie Ockerse, mayor of Zierikzee. The starting point was a homestead that existed as early as the 16th century. The current mansion dates from the first half of the 19th century. A polygonal garden room has been built on one of the sides. Some remnants of the geometric garden layout have been preserved when the park was converted into a landscape style around 1830. The mansion is privately inhabited.
About eight kilometers further you are in Brouwershaven and you drive past the marinas and the market square. After 35 km of the route you will come along the Slotlaan to Slot Moermond, here is a good look, not all navigation maps indicate that you can go to the castle via this road. Your navigation may send you via the village (Renesse).

Moermond Castle, Laône 12 4325 EC Renesse
The current and third castle was built next to the foundations of the original castle of Costijn van Zierikzee that was built between 1229 and 1244 and of which only a few walls have been preserved. The second castle, of the new owner Aernoud van Haamstede, was probably built before 1339 and, except for the gatehouse, was lost in 1454. The new Slot Moermond dates from 1513. Jacob van Serooskerke built the castle for the third time, using the old gatehouse and converting it into a residential tower. The flood disaster of 1953 caused extensive damage to the castle. After restoration, the castle was successively used as a training institute and conference center. It is currently in use as a hotel (Fletcher). Due to the change of purpose in the past, a new building has been created at the rear, which does not take into account the original style of the castle. Almost everything of the interior has also been lost.
After Slot Moermond you go through the Stoofwekken and on the Stoofweg turn right into Renesse! And then towards Haamstede (Burgh-Haamstede) and via the Oosterscheldedam to Walcheren.

Arriving on Walcheren, you pay a visit to Veere, a 13th century old harbor town, which is definitely worth a visit. If you want to skip the place, you have to pass the Veere exit on the N663 and then go in the direction of Gaping/Domburg. You are then still on the route but skip a circle around Veere!
Just before Domburg you pass Westhove Castle and Buitenplaats (little) Duinvliet Domburg.

Westhove Castle, Duinvlietweg 8, 4356 ND Oostkapelle
The castle was mentioned in a charter of 1277 of Count Floris V as being the property of the abbey in Middelburg, but it is not clear how old the castle was at the time. On April 14, 1401, the estate was dedicated to Willem van Beijeren, Count of Oostervant, after which he received it back as an immortal inheritance. Every time a new abbot came, the ascription was adjusted. The abbot was a powerful man in Zeeland, he was also president of the States of Zeeland and Walcheren, and the States met in the abbey. In 1413 Westhove was leased for 25 years to Philips van Borssele, lord of Cortgene. The castle is largely freely accessible (except the attic of the castle). A StayOkay hostel is located in the castle and the accompanying coach houses. The former orangery houses the Terra Maris museum. In addition, a replica of a medieval motte-and-bailey castle has been erected in the garden of the castle.

Duinvliet estate, Domburgseweg 44, 4357 NH, Domburg
This country estate was founded in 1839 by the notary AJ van den Broecke. The design of the neoclassical mansion is attributed to KG Zocher. The current appearance was created when the side wings were raised in 1900. The design of the park is also attributed to KG Zocher. Its characteristic is a fan-wide axis from the house over the lawn and the pond in the direction of Domburgseweg. During the inundation of Walcheren in 1944, the park was seriously damaged. It was restored in 1985. The site of the 18th-century Duinvliet house, which was demolished in 1815, across the road, was the outer garden of this house between 1846 and 1887. Until 1933, the country estate formed a single entity with the adjacent farm 't Hof Klein Duinvliet.

At Domburg you descend towards the Westerschelde and to enjoy it for a while you go along the Boulevard in Vlissingen.
Then you crawl between the A58 and the ports and industry of Vlissingen-Oost, and continue the route to Baarland (municipality of Borssele).

Slot Baarland, Slotstraat 7, 4435 AM Baarland
The history of the castle has not been fully established. It was probably built in the 14th century for the Van Renesse family, who also owned the nearby Hellenburg Castle. The castle was the seat of the seigniory of Baarland, which traditionally also ruled Bakendorp, which was later swallowed by the sea. In the 17th century there was still talk of a large castle with round corner towers, but prints of a later date show only a square building. The last owners were Cornelis van Bol-Es and Jacobus de Backer. They had the castle, which was already in serious disrepair, demolished in 1832. The inventory of the castle contained a number of special items, such as 17th-century portraits of the then owners, the Van Kerchem family. These are now located in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. What remained on site was a moat and walled site and an ornamental garden. The perimeter wall has corner turrets. The former 18th-century coach house has also been preserved. This building, with bell gables, was converted into a residence around 1960 and the castle grounds were also restored. Outside the moat is a reconstructed castle garden in early Renaissance style.

Zeeland
About this region
Zeeland is the westernmost and least populous province of the Netherlands. The province, located in the south-west of the country, borders North Brabant to the east, South Holland to the north, and the country of Belgium to the south and west. It consists of a number of islands and peninsulas (hence its name, meaning "Sealand") and a strip bordering the Flemish provinces of East and West Flanders. Its capital is Middelburg with a population of 48,544 as of November 2019, the largest municipality in Zeeland is Terneuzen (pop. 54,589). Zeeland has two seaports: Vlissingen and Terneuzen. Its area is 2,934 square kilometres (1,130 sq mi), of which 1,151 square kilometres (440 sq mi) is water, and it has a population of 383,689 as of November 2019.
Large parts of Zeeland are below sea level. The last great flooding of the area was in 1953. Tourism is an important economic activity. In the summer, its beaches make it a popular destination for tourists, especially German tourists. In some areas, the population can be two to four times higher during the high summer season. The coat of arms of Zeeland shows a lion half-emerged from water, and the text luctor et emergo (Latin for "I struggle and emerge"). The country of New Zealand was named after Zeeland after it was sighted by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman.
