Ride 12 of the Southern Dozen Two Rivers, One Mountain, and Ten Million Trout EggsThis ride goes up and back into the mountains, you'll ride along the mountain rivers and visit a trout farm and other cool stuff
Feast your eyes on some of the nation’s largest breeding trout, then ascend into the famed Cherokee National Forest. You’ll find yourself in a notorious land formerly known for its whiskey makers and moonshine runners.
The ride starts in Johnson City and the first stop is Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site (RP4) The site includes 45 acres, eleven historic buildings, the Tipton/Gifford/Simerly cemetery, a limestone cave, a natural spring, a buffalo trace, a nature trail, and a Visitor Center. The Visitor Center contains a permanent exhibit, museum store, educational spaces, a library, and archives.
The next stop is in Unicoi (RP5) where we can visit three interesting sites in walking distance of each other; The Clinchfield Railroad Museum, Unicoi County Heritage Museum and National Fish Hatchery
The Clinchfield Railroad Museum tells the story of Erwin's rich railroad legacy. Five rooms exhibit many one-of-a-kind artifacts and rare memorabilia from when Clinchfield was known as the "Gateway to the South." A link to the coalfields of Appalachia and an important connection for towns throughout the South, the Clinchfield was the costliest railroad to be built in its time!
The next 50 miles are great curvy roads along the rivers through the Unuka and Green mountains. Make sure to stop ones in a while to enjoy the beautiful scenery. The next stop is at the river banks of the Nolichucky River (RP12) where you can enjoy rafting, fishing and hiking along the Appalachian Trail.
Plan your lunch stop in Erwin and visit the Choo Choo Café (RP14). The last leg you'll ride the Dry Creek road back to Johnson City, another great scenic ride through the mountains.
I rate this ride with 5 stars because the beautiful twisty roads and scenery
