Black Warrior River
USS Alabama, was the sixth battleship of the United States Navy. It was a South Dakota class battleship, was launched in 1940 and commissioned in 1942.
Until the end of 1943 the ship was added to the British Home Fleet. It helped the British in joint actions, including the security of the island of Spitsbergen and was then part of an operation to lure the German battleship Tirpitz from its Norwegian hideout. After 1943, the Alabama was deployed in various operations to liberate areas occupied by Japan in the South Pacific, and in escorting American aircraft carriers.
In 1964 the Alabama sailed to Mobile Bay on the coast of the state of Alabama. The following year it was opened as a museum ship. The ship was put on the National Historic Landmarks list in 1986.
In 1992 the ship was used for the feature film Under Siege. Even though some film material from the battleship Missouri was used; almost all the action was filmed aboard the Alabama.
In this 4-star route you will drive along beautiful good roads, where a visit to the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park is definitely worth it.
