RouteXpert Review
Today we drive via Jasper and Huntsville, through the northern part of Alabama to Lynchburg. Hometown of the famous Jack Daniel's Distillery. Here you can visit the distillery daily except on National Holidays. These tours are free and daily from 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. Chattanooga, once called 'the dirtiest city in America'. Fortunately, that time has passed for several decades, Chattanooga is now one of the greenest cities in the country, with beautiful water trails, electric buses and pedestrian bridges over the Tennessee River.
The Tennessee Aquarium is by far the number one of popular attractions in Chattanooga. It consists of two characteristic buildings: Ocean Journey and River Journey. This last building contains the largest freshwater aquarium in the world.
On Lookout Mountain, located a short 15-minute drive from Chattanooga's center, you will find several popular attractions, including Rock City, the Ruby Falls and the Incline Railway, a funicular that will take you to the top of the mountain via a 72-degree slope. Rock City contains beautiful viewpoints on top of rock cliffs, including the 'Seven States View'.
Interested in the Civil War? Then go on Lookout Mountain to Point Park. This park is part of Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park.
In this 4-star route you will drive along beautiful good roads, where you naturally have to buy a bottle of Jack Daniel's in the Distillery.
History:
The first inhabitants of the Chattanooga area were Indians. The name is composed of two different indigenous words, namely 'Chato' (which means 'stone') and the suffix 'Nunga' (which means 'residence'). Others again claim that the name Chattanooga is derived from an indigenous name that means as much as 'The Big Catch', because they could fish so well on the nearby Tennesseer River.
The first members of the Cherokee settled there around the year 1776. In 1838, however, the tribe was forced - along with many other Indian tribes - to leave this area and move towards the current state of Oklahoma. The place where Chattanooga is now, was used by the European occupiers to establish emigrants.
The city grew rapidly and benefited from its ideal location on the river. When a railroad was built in 1850, growth accelerated. During the American Civil War there was heavy fighting in Chattanooga. There are many parks and monuments in the city that remind you of the war.
