RouteXpert Review
Embark in Kloosterzande for a tour packed with stories, views, and surprising stops. This route lets you discover the land of Reynard the Fox, with its blend of Dutch and Belgian charm. You'll ride past historic city gates, lively market squares, and tranquil creeks. A day where culture and landscape intertwine again and again.

You begin at Pancake House 't Kabouterke and soon turn onto the quiet Zeeland polder roads. The first few kilometers lead to Graauw for a short fuel stop, after which Hulst beckons with its impressive city walls and the Ghent Gate – a gate that welcomed travelers from Ghent for centuries. Van den Vos Reynaerde (The Fox Reynaerde) is a 13th-century literary masterpiece, probably written by 'Willem,' an East Fleming who lived in the Land van Waas, through which this route passes between De Klinge and Wachtebeke. The cunning fox also had his adventures in the Dutch border town of Nieuw-Namen. His name is often encountered in Hulst, especially in cafés and in the names of buildings and streets. At the Ghent Gate (the southern entrance to the fortified city), there is a statue of the fox.
From Hulst, you head south across the border. Stekene and the Stropersbos forest offer a green break at Brasserie Renard, where the waterfront location makes for a relaxing break. Then, continue along country roads towards Lokeren and Lochristi, with wide Flemish lanes and historic village centers. The return route takes you through Wachtebeke and Zuiddorpe to Axel, a town with a rich history and visible fortification remains. Via Hengstdijk and Kloosterzande, you'll arrive at Brasserie Tommy's, where you can end the day with a hearty meal or something sweet.

The Reynaert Route is a peaceful, cross-border discovery tour that showcases the best of Zeeland and Flanders. The roads are well-maintained, and the stops are logically distributed throughout the day. Ideal for motorcyclists who want to combine history with relaxed riding and plenty of opportunities to dismount.
