Route Summary
Day 7 of an 8-day tour of the Greek island of Crete.

Motorcycling in Crete is a true pleasure. This island has many beautiful winding roads with thousands of bends, idyllic villages, stunning views of the sea, bays, beautiful passes, and ravines.

The locals are very hospitable. The roads are reasonable, but it's recommended to rent an all- or off-road motorcycle, as there are also many poor roads with potholes and unpaved sections.

This highly touristy island boasts many hotels, particularly along the coast. There are also B&Bs and several campsites. This tour will focus on campsites.

The routes can be explored by motorcycle, car, or quad bike, and there are several rental companies in Crete where you can rent all-road, custom, quad bikes, buggies, scooters, and cars. Prices for a weekly motorcycle rental range from €280 to €900, depending on the model.

Renting from Eurodriver has the advantage that they can deliver your motorcycle anywhere, so you can hop on your motorcycle at the airport and start your journey.

This route is worth 4**** stars because of the beautiful roads and stunning scenery. Unfortunately, some roads are of slightly poorer quality and there are fewer sights along the way than on the other routes.

RouteXpert Review
On Day 7, we'll take a tour of the eastern part of Crete, starting and ending in Chania. This day will take us along many beautiful, winding roads with stunning panoramic views. We'll stop at a beautiful beach, a gorge, and a vineyard, among other places.

The first part of the journey follows the coast, but we don't see much of it because this road leads us through villages to the Gonia Odigitria Monastery, also known as the Lady of the Angels Monastery of Gonia. It's a beautiful monastery with a rich history and definitely worth a visit.

We drive a short distance along the Northern Cretan Highway along the coast, offering beautiful views of the sea. At Kissamou, we leave the Northern Cretan Highway again to continue our journey along scenic back roads. These roads are narrow and full of bends, so you'll enjoy them. Be careful, though, as the road surface can sometimes be poor and gravel may be present.

Along the route are several small viewpoints where you can stop briefly to take a photo and enjoy the view. Be sure to stop for a drink and enjoy the view from the terrace at Petroula's Bar.

Lunch is planned in the small village of Elos, where you can choose from several lovely restaurants. We'll drive along a beautiful winding road over the mountains to the coast, where we can stop and enjoy the beautiful Pachia Ammos Beach. It's a wonderful, large beach, perfect for a break, relaxation, and a drink.

After a well-deserved break on the beach, we walk to Selinos Castle. Today, only a few ruins of the castle remain, most of which date back to the Turkish occupation. The fortress was almost square. It consisted of two towers on the south side and one on the north. Like all fortresses, it included billeting areas, government housing, a church, and small water tanks. These two towers are still visible among the other ruins of Selinos Castle.

We drive back into the mountains, and the roads wind beautifully upwards again, offering stunning panoramas after every (hairpin) bend. Those who enjoy hiking can also take a short walk through the Agia Irini Gorge; it's 7.5 km long, so a short section to take some beautiful photos might be more than enough for most. If you want to hike the entire gorge, there's an option to take a taxi back to your starting point at the end. Plan on at least three hours for this hike.

After another 35 kilometers of delightful driving, we arrive at the Manousakis Winery. A great opportunity to experience how wine is made. You can also enjoy local dishes here. Just be aware that "don't drink and drive" means either participating in the wine tasting or spitting it out. Pay attention when leaving, because Here and TomTom don't see eye to eye on this one. After this wonderful end to the day, it's another 18 kilometers to the campsite in Chania.

This route deserves 4**** stars because of the beautiful roads and stunning scenery. Unfortunately, some roads are of slightly poorer quality and there are fewer sights along the way than on the other routes, but that doesn't change the fact that this is a route where you can enjoy the many bends.

About this region
Crete (Greek: Κρήτη, Modern: Kríti, Ancient: Krḗtē, [krέːtεː]) is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, the 88th largest island in the world and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, and Corsica. Crete rests approximately 160 km (99 mi) south of the Greek mainland. It has an area of 8,336 km2 (3,219 sq mi) and a coastline of 1,046 km (650 mi). It bounds the southern border of the Aegean Sea, with the Sea of Crete (or North Cretan Sea) to the north and the Libyan Sea (or South Cretan Sea) to the south.
Crete and a number of islands and islets that surround it constitute the Region of Crete (Greek: Περιφέρεια Κρήτης), which is the southernmost of the 13 top-level administrative units of Greece, and the fifth most populous of Greece's regions. Its capital and largest city is Heraklion, located on the north shore of the island. As of 2020, the region had a population of 636,504. The Dodecanese are located to the northeast of Crete, while the Cyclades are situated to the north, separated by the Sea of Crete. The Peloponnese is to the region's northwest.
Humans have inhabited the island since at least 130,000 years ago, during the Paleolithic age. Crete was the centre of Europe's first advanced civilization, the Minoans, from 2700 to 1420 BC. The Minoan civilization was overrun by the Mycenaean civilization from mainland Greece. Crete was later ruled by Rome, then successively by the Byzantine Empire, Andalusian Arabs, the Venetian Republic, and the Ottoman Empire. In 1898 Crete, whose people had for some time wanted to join the Greek state, achieved independence from the Ottomans, formally becoming the Cretan State. Crete became part of Greece in December 1913.
The island is mostly mountainous, and its character is defined by a high mountain range crossing from west to east. It includes Crete's highest point, Mount Ida, and the range of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) with 30 summits above 2000 metres in altitude and the Samaria Gorge, a World Biosphere Reserve. Crete forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece, while retaining its own local cultural traits (such as its own poetry and music). The Nikos Kazantzakis airport at Heraklion and the Daskalogiannis airport at Chania serve international travelers. The palace of Knossos, a Bronze Age settlement and ancient Minoan city, is also located in Heraklion.
