Route Summary
Located in the heart of Italy, Tuscany is one of the most beautiful regions in the country. This is due to the combination of an abundance of art treasures and a fascinatingly beautiful nature.
This is a region for those who love natural beauty and genuine art of living, heart-warming hospitality and spontaneous pride. This is a compelling story written by the Medicis and Dante Alighieri, colored by Michelangelo and Botticelli. A region that cherishes its ancient treasures and preserves its harmony, which leads winding roads through wheat fields and vineyards, past Etruscans and Romans, Renaissance and Middle Ages.
Those looking for the ideal mix of culture, art, history, nature and gastronomy will certainly find what they are looking for in Tuscany.

North of Siena is the beautiful Chianti region, world famous for its red wine production. The untouched nature of this region has been a source of inspiration for many painters and poets for centuries. But the Chianti hills were also the scene of the many conflicts between Florence and Siena in the Middle Ages. Today the landscape is dotted with beautiful villas and farms.

RouteXpert Review
You leave in Montespertoli where you can rent a holiday home (airbnb). The route runs south through the Chianti region towards Siena.
In this ride is a piece of 'strade bianche' (between RP 4 and 5) of about 2 km long. Strade Bianche or White Roads are dirt gravel roads that cross the Tuscan countryside and wind their way through oak forests, olive groves, vineyards, meadows and wheat fields. The white color that gives these roads their unique character comes from the compacted local limestone gravel they form. Today, the Strade Bianche have been preserved as a national treasure.

In Siena you are not allowed to enter by motorcycle. Only vehicles with a 'special permit' have access. By the way, this applies to all major cities in Italy. In Siena you can park at RP 8. From here you can continue on foot to the city center with its beautiful cathedral. There are many places to have a drink or a meal here. However, the route is too long for a thorough visit.
After Siena, the route runs through the beautiful Chianti region with many vineyards and plantings with olive trees. It is very hilly.

In Gaiole in Chianti you can visit the Castello di Brolio (RP 15). The castle is privately owned by the Ricasoli family. The castle can only be visited from the outside. But that is certainly worth it. From the terrace you have a beautiful view of the region.
Continue to the historic and elegant Castello Di Meleto (RP 16) which is located on a hill overlooking the Massellone valley, 2 km from Gaiole in Chianti. This castle is now a hotel / winery.

We make a short stop at the Abbazia di San Lorenzo a Coltibuono (RP 17). This abbey was founded in 770. Coltibuono, turned into a monastery, owned considerable properties, as evidenced by several documents of the monastery, and joined the municipality of Vallombrosa in 1095; Ugo Ricasoli built the church tower in 1160.
In 1810, after the edict issued by Napoleon, the monastery was closed and turned into a farm! Coltibuono has been an important farm for 1,000 years, producing excellent wines and oils. The abbey was downgraded to a simple parish church.

This route receives 4.5 stars. The roads are excellent. There is a small piece of strade bianche, but this is also easy to drive. The untouched nature through the vineyards of the Chianti region offers very beautiful views. Those looking for culture and history will find what they are looking for during the walk through Siena.
