RouteXpert Review
Put on your helmet and start the engine for a ride through the Groningen polder landscape, where the horizon seems endless. Here you will ride past impressive steam pumping stations, cozy villages and quiet dikes with a view over the Eems. The route follows the traces of the hydraulic engineers and farmers who shaped this landscape over the centuries. From the Bell Foundry Museum to the steam engines in Winschoten and the cozy harbor of Termunterzijl: every stop tells a story.

The day starts at Koffiehuis De Geiser Inn in Scheemda, where a fresh cup of coffee will get you going. From here you turn onto the quiet country roads towards Heiligerlee, where you will find the Klokkengieterijmuseum. A beautiful place where you can learn everything about the craft of bell casting. A little further on is Winschoten, where the Museum Stoomgemaal takes you back to the time when steam engines determined the water level. The route winds along the quiet waterways and the old dikes of East Groningen. You pass Beerta and Finsterwolde, typical Oldambt villages with stately farms, and follow the dike road along the Dollard towards Termunterzijl. Here you will find the Museumgemaal Cremer, a working steam pumping station that gives you an insight into the water management of the region. A little further on is De Remise, a former tram station that now serves as a fish restaurant. Here you can enjoy a fresh fish dish while looking out over the water. After this break, you continue to Delfzijl, where you ride over the windy dikes along the Eems, with wide views over the water. From Delfzijl, the route bends to the Eemskanaal, one of the most important waterways in the Northern Netherlands. Motorcyclists will enjoy the tight, straight roads along the water. Via Appingedam and Steendam you reach the Schildmeer, a perfect place to stretch your legs and enjoy the tranquility of the water. On the way back you ride through the quiet Oldambt, past Noordbroek and Zuidbroek, where you can make a final stop before returning to Koffiehuis De Geiser Inn in Scheemda.

The Eems and Oldambt route offers a perfect combination of dike roads, maritime history and wide views. The route is ideal for those who love quiet back roads, long straight stretches and historical stops. With a length of approximately 90 kilometers, this is an ideal ride for a relaxing day trip through the north of the Netherlands.
