Rondrit Weerribben en Giethoorn vanuit Rossum Ov

Route Summary
The Weerribben – Swamp forest, water, birds, and endless reed beds: the nature in the Weerribben looks pristine. But appearances are deceiving, for every meter of land here has been created by man. Through peat extraction, the landscape was transformed into a soggy area with valuable marsh nature. A nursery for the otter, a clever and playful animal that, with a bit of luck, might show itself. (source: Staatsbosbeheer)

Giethoorn, also known as 'Dutch Venice' or 'The Venice of the North', is a small village in the northern part of Overijssel.

The route leads from Rossum along mainly small roads to the Weerribben and Giethoorn, mostly avoiding built-up areas.

I rode this route in April 2020. The weather gods were kind to me, so fortunately, the heavy rain along this route did not come from above. Because of this specific part of the Netherlands, I rate this route 3 stars.

RouteXpert Review
The Weerribben is a 35 km² nature reserve in the municipality of Steenwijkerland in the northwest of the Dutch province of Overijssel. It forms part of the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. A beautiful destination for a water-rich route!

The route starts and ends at Bistro Tram 2, situated between Oldenzaal and Rossum in a beautiful location, where a delicious cup of coffee is served.

The route follows mainly small roads towards the Weerribben and Giethoorn, located in the Kop van Overijssel.

Places the route passes through include Ootmarsum, Zwartsluis, Blokzijl, and Ossenzijl, and of course Giethoorn. It even passes through a small part of Germany.

Do not hesitate to visit Blokzijl and see how authentic this little town is. The charming harbor or, right in the center, the drawbridge. A great backdrop for a photo!

Also interesting to see is the Tjasker Ossenzijl at RP19. The small mill is used to supply water to the reed beds behind it. It is amazing how such an apparently simple mill can be so effective.

At RP31, there is the opportunity to take a look at the center of Giethoorn on foot. It is amazing to see how the many whisper boats, called punters, often loaded with tourists, are steered through the narrow waterways of this picturesque village.

All in all, a nice route towards a beautiful part of the Netherlands with a rich history!

Have fun driving this route!

About this region
Flevoland (Dutch: [ˈfleːvoːlɑnt] (listen)) is the 12th and youngest province of the Netherlands, established in 1986, when the Southern and Eastern Flevopolders, together with the Noordoostpolder were merged into one provincial entity. It is in the centre of the country in the former Zuiderzee, which was turned into the freshwater IJsselmeer by the closure of the Afsluitdijk in 1932. Almost all of the land belonging to Flevoland was reclaimed in the 1950s and 1960s while splitting the Markermeer and Bordering lakes from the IJsselmeer. As to dry land, it is the smallest province of the Netherlands at 1,412 km2 (545 sq mi), but not gross land as that includes much of the waters of the fresh water lakes (meres) mentioned. The province has a population of 423,021 as of January 2020 and consists of six municipalities. Its capital is Lelystad and its most populous city is Almere.
Flevoland is bordered in the extreme north by Friesland, in the northeast by Overijssel, and in the northwest by the lakes Markermeer and IJsselmeer. In the southeast, the province borders on Gelderland, and in the southwest on Utrecht and North Holland.

Friesland officially, Frisian: Fryslân is a province in the north of the Netherlands. Friesland had 660,560 inhabitants in 2018. The capital is Leeuwarden. In addition to Dutch, Frisian has the status of administrative language in the province. But who does not know Friesland from the Elfstedentocht? An unparalleled skating festival, unfortunately it has been a long time since the last Elfsteden tour was held in Friesland, January 4, 1997 to be precise.

Not only your own language and a skating tour along the 11 Frisian cities, but also a very beautiful province to tour by car or motorcycle and enjoy all the beauty that the province of Friesland has to offer. For this purpose, a MyRoute app RouteXpert has compiled a Top 10 of Car and Motorcycle routes for you.
