Terpenland Route – Through the ancient Frisian landscape
The Terpenlandroute takes you through a unique part of the Netherlands, where history literally towers above the landscape. From Leeuwarden you start a journey through the Frisian terp area, a region where villages are built on raised residential hills to escape the water. You ride over dikes, through characteristic villages and past old estates and monasteries, while the vast landscape surrounds you. The route winds via Hallum, Ferwert and Dokkum to the eastern side of Friesland, to finally end up in Leeuwarden. This is a route full of history, bends and tranquility, ideal for a relaxing day on the motorbike.
Due to the historical character of the route, 3 stars.

Start and end point: Leeuwarden, Eurohotel

RouteXpert Review
Start your engine and let Friesland take you through a landscape full of history and space. The Terpenlandroute lets you discover the oldest residential areas of Friesland, with narrow dikes, long polder roads and quiet villages. Here you can feel the history in every bend, while the horizon seems endless. Old estates, centuries-old churches and the open Frisian countryside make this ride a unique experience. Get on and experience Friesland as you have never known it before.

You start this route at the Eurohotel in Leeuwarden, a perfect base for a day of touring. You soon leave the city behind and dive into the Frisian countryside. You pass Marsum and Engelum, where the first terp villages appear. These are centuries-old residential hills, built by the Frisians to protect themselves from the water. The road winds through the landscape and takes you to Bitgummole and Koarnjum, where old estates and farms greet you. The route continues to surprise you with narrow, winding roads through Jelsum and Stiens, where you experience the typical Frisian tranquility. Via Hallum and Marrum you drive towards the Wadden Sea, where you get the feeling that time ticks more slowly here. A stop is recommended in Ferwert: a small but historic village with an impressive terp and an old church that has defied the elements for centuries. You slowly turn east and reach Dokkum, one of the most famous Frisian cities. Here you will find the old fortifications and cozy streets, perfect for a short break. An ideal place is Stadscafé-Restaurant Artisante, where you can enjoy lunch with a view of the canals.
After the break, you continue your way through the eastern Frisian landscape, with long polder roads and quiet villages such as Westergeest and Oudwoude. Here you drive past Rinsma State, a beautiful historic country house that offers a glimpse into the Frisian nobility of the past. The last kilometers take you via Gytsjerk and Feanwâlden back towards Leeuwarden. But before you enter the city, there is another special stop: the Oldehove. This leaning tower monument, the Frisian answer to the Tower of Pisa, offers a beautiful view of the city and the surroundings.
You will end up back at the Eurohotel, where you can end the day with a drink and enjoy this beautiful tour through the Frisian Terpenland.

The Terpenlandroute is a unique mix of history, landscape and quiet winding roads. With some 110 kilometres of well-maintained roads and varied views, this is an ideal ride for those who want to experience Friesland in a different way. Along dikes, through polder roads and via centuries-old villages, you will feel the history under your wheels.
