RouteXpert Review
This route starts and ends next to the river Minho and will take you through some outstanding Portuguese countryside. Soon after leaving the hotel, you will be on a twisty, tree lined road and heading for the hills and Soajo Mountains. At RP 4 you have the option of visiting the sanctuary and hermitage at Peneda. The Peneda sanctuary is situated beneath a large granite mountain with a spectacular staircase of 300 steps and different altars with figures of Christ's footsteps, an important example of neoclassical church architecture in Portugal. You are now in the Peneda-Gêres National Park which has one of the most unique landscapes in northern Portugal. When you tour the land of wild horses, your senses will be sharpened to the colours of the mountain, the scent of heather, and the sounds of animals roaming free. There are many viewpoints (I have only marked a few) to take in the breathtaking scenery, some go on for as long as the eye can see.
If it is hot, there is a lovely little shady river under the bridge at RP 7, cool off when you can.
RP 8 is at Soajo there is a great group of espigueiros, stone stores that are built on stilts to keep the vermin away from harvested crops, you'll see more of these later on the route.
The magnificent Alto Lindoso Dam is a great place for a photo. After crossing the dam we arrive in Lindoso. Lindoso boasts an impressive castle dating back to the 11th century, overlooking the border with Spain and the valley of the Lima river. From its ramparts you can get a fine view of the sixty granaries from the 18th century (espigueiros) clustered under its protection.
After a coffee stop at RP 12, the route will take you into some very rural countryside that represents this part of Portugal well. Some of the roads are small but they have been chosen to see the best sights.
I have suggested a lunch stop at the small town of Paredes de Coura, there is a good selection of restaurants and a fuel station.
After lunch, the route use the delightful N-301, this road is a little larger an has plenty of bends to keep the smile on your face. After 1 hour you will reach the Atlantic Ocean and your hotel.
I have awarded 5 stars for this route, the roads and attractions are very good and the scenery is excellant.
RP 7 Cool River under bridge
RP 10 Grain stores and castle at Lindoso
