From Radstadt the road takes you north, past breathtaking lakes, on the way to your final destination Waldkirchen am Wesen, located on the majestic Schöne Blaue Donau.
From Kaprun it is a relatively short distance to the town of Brück an der Großglocknerstraße. There you will follow the Salzach River, which has its origins in the Hohe Tauern Park and runs all the way to Salzburg. An area that is popular with both summer and winter tourists
Along the picturesque Pinzgauer Strasse, or the B311, you follow the river to Lend through the Pinzgau region. This road then continues into the Pongau region. Both regions are located in the state of Salzburg in the Kitzbühel Alps.
This road passes through an area known for its breathtaking landscapes, with snow-capped peaks in winter, lush green valleys and quaint villages.
This road is characterized as a beautiful route past several charming villages and offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including the Hohe Tauern. The road is loved by travelers for its breathtaking nature, opportunities for outdoor activities and picturesque surroundings. However, you only follow this road until Sankt Johan im Pongau.
You will not notice that many place names in this area stand out because of the regional addition 'im Pongau'. This is a custom to identify the location more specifically and distinguish it from places of the same name that are in different regions.
Pongau is loved by both summer and winter tourists, for its abundance of outdoor activities, including hiking, skiing, mountain biking, motorcycling and much more.
This region is also home to picturesque towns and villages where typical Austrian hospitality prevails. Here you can enjoy cultural sights such as castles, churches and museums, giving you a deeper insight into the rich history and culture of this beautiful area.
While en route, you will travel along the southern reaches of the mountain region called 'Salzburger Schieferalpen' or the 'Salzburg Slate Alps', located between Zell am See and Radstadt. This particular mountain range is part of the majestic Alps. Along this road you will pass several small villages with a modest population.
Unlike other routes in the region, this route is characterized by the presence of lower mountain ranges with a maximum height of 1000 meters. This means that most mountains look more like hills and are less noticeable compared to the higher Alpine peaks. Although there are several sights along the route, they are relatively difficult to see due to the forestation along the roads you pass.
Just before Sankt Johan you pass the village of Schwarzach im Pongau. Here you will visit the historic Taurern railway museum, which was opened on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Tauernbahn. This museum is located in a renovated depot of the adjacent station.
Sankt Johan im Pongau, which was once part of the principality of Salzburg, is one of the many popular holiday destinations in Pongau. In addition, this place is the transport hub for the surrounding area.
If you are near this city, you should definitely not miss the Alpendorf Gondelbahn.
This cable car is located in Alpendorf, and takes you directly to the top of the mountain, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surroundings. The cable car provides access to the Gernkogel Hiking and Alpine Region, and is also the starting point for many hiking trails in the area.
To avoid staying in one place for too long, drive around Sankt Johann, enjoying beautiful views of the different parts of the city along the way. Don't forget the Pfarerkirche, a historic church dedicated to John the Baptist and dating from the 15th century, which is located in the city on the right side of the route.
Once driving east you pass the popular winter sports resort of Wagrain.
Further on, at Sinnhub, your route turns north, after which you will have your coffee stop at Gasthof Brubbhaeusl, Hüttau. This restaurant in Salzburg, which has been in the family for 200 years, dates from the 16th century and was an inn at that time.
After departing from this coffee break, you will drive under the imposing Tauern Autobahn, which connects Salzburg with Spittal.
Enjoying the beautiful road you follow, you cross the Gerzkops nature reserve. A little later you drive via the towns of Lindentall and Gosau towards the 125 meter deep Halstätter See into which the Traun River, a tributary of the Danube, flows.
Salzkammergut is the name of this area which is located in the state of Upper Austria.
The area extends from the nostalgic Bohemian Forest to the Alps of the Salzkammergut. Between both mountain ranges you will find the Danube valley with medieval towns. The historic village of Hallstatt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located slightly further south of the lake. This tourist village is only accessible by boat or via a road built against the mountainside. A visit to this village is not included in this route, but a short visit to a beautiful viewpoint over the lake is included.
The next part of the route takes you via Bad Ischl to the Traunsee. You follow the road for about 11 km along this impressive 24 square kilometer lake, which is also the deepest lake in this Alpine region. You can have your lunch stop in nearby Gmundnerberg.
After the break it is a relatively short drive to the Landschloss Ort for a short visit to the Tuscany Park. This park is characteristic for its lush greenery and beautiful landscaping and known for its statues and sculptures, including the famous "Fischerbrunnen" (Fisher's Fountain), which is a signature attraction in this park.
After visiting the park you start the last part of this route. During the journey you will pass through picturesque Schwanenstadt, a city known for the production of metalworking machines.
The ride continues through a fairly flat area, and eventually you make a stop in Peuerbach to refuel. It was a beautiful journey with interesting stops and varied landscape.
As you cover the last few kilometers, you arrive at your final destination, where you can spend the night at the historic Seminarhotel Wesenufer. Overlooking the Danube, this 18th century location once served as a customs office and tax office for shipping traffic on the Danube.
Today the building exudes a unique atmosphere steeped in rich history. Located in the small village of Waldkirchen am Wesen, which enchants you with its charm and peaceful surroundings, you can enjoy the serene atmosphere steeped in profound history.
If you still have time and inclination, definitely consider a visit to the open-air museum 'Fahrner Figure Park', located within walking distance of the hotel. Crafted by local woodworker Johann Fahrner, these enchanting sculptures are testament to his exquisite craftsmanship. Hidden in a wooded area, the park showcases a collection of beautiful wooden works of art, each with its own story and a variety of characters, both fictional and historical.
Looking back on this journey you will be enchanted by the serene beauty of the quiet roads, surrounded by majestic mountains and experiences in a timeless atmosphere where history and contemporary experiences merge. Upon arrival at your final destination, an enchanting end to your trip awaits, imbued with historical allure, culinary indulgence and artistic admiration. Take a moment to review all these experiences as you enjoy a beer on the terrace of a beautiful hotel with a view of the beautiful Blue Danube.
