Bert Loorbach, the author, is an avid motorcyclist himself and lived in France for a year and a half. During that time, he dedicated himself to mapping France's lesser-known and beautiful back roads specifically for motorcyclists. Hotels, campsites, sights, parking lots, and restaurants are included as points of interest.
We start in Grimaud, near St. Tropez (the original starting point in the Motortourgids), and there are many good campsites and hotels in this area. We'll take the D559 along the coast to Frèjus. Those who prefer to ride through the mountains can take the winding D8 road through the mountains to Frèjus.
Along the coastal road, you can enjoy the panoramic views; there are several small parking areas and beaches where you can stop for a photo. Just before Frèjus, there's a larger beach where you can also have a drink. So, you could stop here for a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean Sea.
After our visit to Frèjus, we continue along the coast on one of the most beautiful routes, if not the most beautiful route, in France: La Corniche d'Or, or La Corniche d'Estérel. From Saint-Raphaël, we travel past Le Dramont and Théoule-sur-Mer to Mandelieu-la-Napoule and Cannes. A route along the Mediterranean Sea and the red-brown Estérel Mountains.
It's guaranteed to create beautiful pictures. It's a fantastic road for a motorcycle ride. A truly enjoyable 40 kilometers, with several small towns, beaches, and sights along the way where you can take a break.
I marked a number of points with a waypoint.
• There is a diving centre in Boulouris, so those who want to observe the flora and fauna in the turquoise water can stop here to dive in the heart of Cap Roux, Au Dramont or Lion de Mer to discover or rediscover the fauna and flora of our beautiful Mediterranean Sea: sea breams, conger eels, sars, barracudas and much more.
We also pass beautiful sights such as:
• Anthéor Viaduct: Built in 1862 as part of the railway line between the eastern Var region and the Nice region. During World War II, the viaduct was bombed several times by the Allies, but was not completely destroyed. The viaduct was finally destroyed by the Allies during the Landing in Provence on August 15, 1944, to hinder German troop movements. Today, traces of the damage and reconstruction can still be seen, and a commemorative plaque has been placed on the third pier in honor of the soldiers who took part in the landing.
• Pointe de l'Aiguille offers beautiful views over the bay and there is a small beach.
• Château de la Napoule with its beautiful castle gardens and wonderful views over the Mediterranean Sea.
• Jazz Walk of Fame in Antibes, located next to La Pinède Gould Park (the site of the annual Jazz à Juan Jazz Festival). Here you can stroll along the walk of fame and see the handprints in the pavement of many jazz musicians, including Sidney Bechet, B.B. King, and Ray Charles, who have played at the festival over the years.
We'll drive across the peninsulas of Cap d'Antibes and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, with their beautiful palatial villas, to Nice and Monaco. Enjoy all the splendor along the way.
From Monaco, we deviate from the original route and drive along narrow, winding mountain roads to our destination in Menton, where you can stay overnight in one of the many hotels or at Camping St Michel just outside the city.
