RouteXpert Review
As mentioned, this tour is all about a visit to the ancient city of Olympia, Olympia is located in a valley in the Peloponnese. The name Olympia referred to the sacred mountain of Olympus, the abode of the god Zeus. In the 10th century BC, Olympia became a center for worship of Zeus. The Altis – the sanctuary to the gods – has one of the greatest concentrations of masterpieces from the ancient Greek world. In addition to temples, there are remains of all the sports facilities that were built for the Olympic Games in the area. These were held at Olympia every four years. Well before our era, 776 BC, the first Olympic Games took place here. At the time, the sporting event lasted a day and there was only one part, namely a stadium run of 192 meters.
Olympia is perhaps the best known and most famous landmark in Greece. Not only did the Olympic Games start here, but you can now see a lot here. Every four years, the Olympic flame is lit here to continue its journey to the destination where the Olympic Games will take place.

Olympia is located between the mountain Kronos, the river Alfios and its tributary Kladeos. It is one of the most fertile and humid valleys of the Peloponnese.

In 1875, the classical sanctuary of Olympia was uncovered by archaeologists from Germany. In Olympia you can not only visit the archaeological site with the Doric Temple of Hera as a point of interest, but also the archaeological museum and the museum of the Olympic Games. An International Olympic Academy was established in 1961 with its headquarters in Olympia. A 12 meter high statue of Zeus was made in the workshop of Phidias. The statue of Zeus can be seen today in the Olympia museum. The Zeus Temple from 457 BC is an impressive sight of Olympia and the Hera Temple, of which a number of columns can still be seen, should not be missed during your visit.

Once at the hotel, try your hand at swimming an Olympic record in the pool.

About this region
The Peloponnese () or Peloponnesus (; Greek: Πελοπόννησος, romanized: Pelopónnēsos, IPA: [peloˈponisos]) is a peninsula and geographic region in southern Greece. It is connected to the central part of the country by the Isthmus of Corinth land bridge which separates the Gulf of Corinth from the Saronic Gulf. During the late Middle Ages and the Ottoman era, the peninsula was known as the Morea (Byzantine Greek: Μωρέας), a name still in colloquial use in its demotic form (Greek: Μωριάς).
The peninsula is divided among three administrative regions: most belongs to the Peloponnese region, with smaller parts belonging to the West Greece and Attica regions.
