Route Summary
This is day 6 of a 12 day Road Trip in Iceland.

Driving in Iceland is a great experience, whether you travel by car or, as described in this review, by motorcycle.

These itineraries are based on information about Iceland found online, particularly from the Guide to Iceland, where you'll find a wealth of information to help you prepare for your trip. The material on this site has been compiled with great care; the link can be found in the review of the first itinerary in this series.

You will drive through landscapes that are varied and beautiful, you will see glacier tongues, volcanic mountains, geothermal areas with active geysers, lava fields, craters, forests, waterfalls and incredibly rugged stretches of coastline.
The routes in the north are part of the Arctic Coast Way.

The main roads are of good quality, but you'll also be traveling on gravel roads, making them unsuitable for road motorcycles. Some of these roads are sometimes closed due to weather. It's therefore important to check the weather forecast and road conditions every day before you leave. This information can be found on the website of the Icelandic Meteorological Office and, for road conditions, on the website of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration. The links are in the review.

Due to the Icelandic climate, this trip can only be done in summer.

This route deserves 5 stars thanks to its breathtaking panoramas, impressive nature and varied activities.

Day 6 – Lake Mývatn Discovery Tour
Today we'll explore the impressive nature and unique sights around Lake Mývatn, one of Iceland's most beautiful regions.

Our first stop is at Mount Námafjall, where you'll have a spectacular view of the Hverir geothermal area. Here you'll see bubbling mud pools, hissing steam vents, and colorful sulfur fields – a landscape that feels almost otherworldly.

Next, we visit the Mývatn Nature Baths, a geothermal spa in a protected nature reserve. Relax in the warm, mineral-rich water and enjoy panoramic views of the volcanic landscape.

Next, we'll stop at Grjótagjá, a small lava cave with a crystal-clear hot spring. Although swimming is no longer permitted here due to the high temperatures, it's a truly special place to admire.

Our route continues to Dimmuborgir, a nature reserve known for its bizarre lava formations and caves. These impressive rock formations, created by volcanic eruptions some 3,000 years ago, resemble a collapsed castle – hence the name "dark castles."

After these discoveries, we continue west along Route 1. Along the way, there are several viewpoints where you can stop to enjoy the view of Lake Mývatn.

We'll take a short break at Skútustaðir. Here you can take a walk past the pseudocraters and the picturesque Stakhólstjörn Lake.

The highlight of this trip is Goðafoss, one of Iceland's largest and most beautiful waterfalls. Its name means "Waterfall of the Gods," and it's an absolute must-see.

On the way to Akureyri you will enjoy a beautiful view over the Eyjafjörður fjord, the longest fjord in Iceland (60 km).
In Akureyri, the capital of the north, you can have lunch and, for those interested, take a whale-watching excursion. The town itself offers several attractions:

Akureyri Art Museum – for art lovers
Laxdalshús – the oldest house in Akureyri (1795)
Akureyrarkirkja – an iconic church with a unique design
Botanical Gardens – a floral splendor, especially in summer

We continue our route along the fjord to the end point of this beautiful ride, Siglufjörður, a charming fishing village with 1,190 inhabitants, known for the Herring Museum (Herring Era Museum), where we will spend the night.
