I drove this special route in 2020 and 2021 and optimized it for Garmin and TomTom. The drive is on easily accessible polder and dyke roads, but also through rustic towns and villages. This route therefore deserves 5 stars.

Castle de Haar
The Green Heart consists largely of polders. Until the 1980s, water management within these polders was in the hands of hundreds of water boards and water boards. These polders were created around 1500 - 1900 by dike and drainage with windmills, many of which can still be admired. No fewer than 13 are shown on this route. All built between 1513 (the Wingerdse mill in Bleskensgraaf) and 1913 (the Vlietmolen of Hoogmade).
Other striking points on this route are Kasteel de Haar (Haarzuilen), the Watertoren and Gerbrandy Tower in Lopik (also known as the Lopik sand mast, still the highest building construction in the Netherlands).
A striking location is also the Hefbrug Boskoop over the Gouwe. This special steel construction is a national monument.
Details in order of this route
Doesmolen
De Doesmolen, built in 1636, is a hollow post mill near Hoogmade. The mill is the first on the Doespolderweg that can be seen when approaching Hoogmade from the west; a short distance from the Doesmolen you will find the Grosmolen along the same road.
Lime mill
De Kalkmolen is a polder mill in Hoogmade, which stood in Leiderdorp until 2007, between the A4 and the industrial estate. The mill dates from 1685 and was built for the drainage of the Kalkpolder. The mill has been in the possession of the Rijnlandse Molenstichting since it was decommissioned in 1972
Grosmolen
The Grosmolen is a hollow post mill near Hoogmade. The mill on the Doespolderweg was built in 1640 for the drainage of the Voorofse or Grospolder, as a replacement for a blown over hollow post mill. The Grosmolen was in operation until 1956.
Vlietmolen
The Vlietmolen is a hollow post mill just east of Hoogmade. The mill was built in 1913 for the drainage of the Vlietpolder, as a replacement for a previously burnt down mill. At the bottom of the mill is a house that is inhabited. Until 1929 the mill had a paddle wheel.
Castle the hair
Kasteel De Haar (formerly Het Huys te Haer) is a monumental castle in the Utrecht village of Haarzuilens. It is the largest castle in the Netherlands. It was built in neo-Gothic style on the ruins of the old castle from 1892.
De Haar consists of an extensive area in which, in addition to the main building, there are associated gardens and buildings such as a chapel. The adjacent village also has a strong relationship with the castle and the whole is part of a protected village view.
Water tower
The water tower in Lopik was designed and built in 1936 on Damweg. The water tower has a height of 47 meters and has one water reservoir with a volume of 400 m³.
Gerbrandy Tower
The Gerbrandy Tower, also known as Zendmast Lopik, is a tower with a transmission mast in IJsselstein for FM radio and television broadcasts, (mobile) telecommunications and data storage. The television channel was put into operation 1 in 1961. At 372 meters, the Gerbrandy Tower is the highest construction in the Netherlands.
Gelkenes mill
The Gelkenes Molen is one of the three seesaw mills on the Molenkade in Groot-Ammers, in the Dutch municipality of Molenlanden, along the water of the Ammersche Boezem. The mill dates from 1596 or earlier and drained the Polder Liesveld until 1965. There is a house in the Gelkenes Mill.
Graafland windmill
The Graaflandse Molen is one of the three seesaw mills that are located on the Molenkade in Groot-Ammers, in the Dutch municipality of Molenlanden, along the water of the Ammersche Boezem. It is also known locally as the Second Mill. The mill dates from 1596 or earlier and drained the Polder Liesveld until 1965
Octagonal mill
Due to its shape, the Achtzijds Molen in Groot-Ammers, in the municipality of Molenlanden, stands out among the seesaw mills that are located elsewhere along the water. The mill was installed in 1805 to replace a hollow post mill that burned down earlier that year.
Hinterland mill
The Achterlandse Molen is one of the three seesaw mills on the Molenkade in Groot-Ammers, in the municipality of Molenlanden, along the water of the Ammersche Boezem. The mill dates from 1596 or earlier and drained the Polder Liesveld until 1969
Mill the Friendship
Windmill De Vriendschap in the Dutch town of Bleskensgraaf is a tower mill that was built in 1890 by order of Johan 't Hooft. The mill replaced the wiped flour mill that had already stood on the same site around 1680.
Vineyard windmill
The Wingerdse Molen in Bleskensgraaf is a hollow post mill of which the year of construction is unknown. This polder mill was probably built in 1513. The tube is from 1624. In 1872 the mill was raised by the brickwork of the field walls, so that a greater flight could be obtained.
Level gauge
The Peilmolen in Oud-Alblas, in the municipality of Molenlanden, was built in 1818 to drain the Zuidzijderpolder.
Windmill in Kooiwijk
Polder mill the Kooijwijkse Molen at Kooiwijk 1 in Oud-Alblas (also municipality of Molenlanden) is a ground sailor that was built in 1866 to drain the Noordzijde polder. The mill replaced a dilapidated post-mill on the same site
Souburgh windmill
The Souburgse Molen is a round stone mill. The mill was built in 1860 and was used as a polder mill until 1945. The mill drained the Souburg polder with a paddle wheel until this function was taken over by an electric pumping station. He was dismantled in 1997. After the mill was out of operation, a low house was built next to the mill, so that it was no longer possible to season round. In the meantime, the house has been demolished and the mill turned ready. The hull has been jacked up and straightened, whereby the foundation has been strengthened. On May 11, 2020, the blades of the Souburgse Molen turned for the first time since 1945
The Boskoop lift bridge
Boskoop lift bridge is a lift bridge over the Gouwe in the town of Boskoop. The bridge was built in 1935-1936 by steel company NV De Vries Robbé & Co and was put into use on October 7, 1936. The bridge and associated bridge keeper's house is a national monument

The 10 most beautiful car and motorcycle routes in the Netherlands
These 10 routes in the Netherlands have been carefully selected, checked and made equal for TomTom, Garmin and MyRoute-app Navigation by a MyRoute-app RouteXpert. The 10 most beautiful motorcycle and car routes in the Netherlands are always a snapshot, and a personal opinion of the reviewer. This does not alter the fact that every lover of beautiful roads and interesting sights will enjoy these routes.
The ten routes are spread over 10 provinces, we only skipped Flevoland and South Holland. Interesting routes can also be found in the MyRoute app RouteXpert library, but we still want to stick to the 10 most beautiful and not the 12 most beautiful.
Enjoy the many fortresses and castles that are included in the routes, such as Fort Veldhuis in North Holland. But also take a look at the route southeast of Nijmegen and visit the impressive Canadian War Cemetery and Memorial. The route 'Overijssel in bird's eye view' includes the oldest house in the Netherlands and the route along the IJssel is probably the most beautiful piece of asphalt in the Netherlands.
This way there is something for everyone in this route collection. If you do not agree with these 10 routes, please send us an e-mail, indicate which route(s) should be removed and which route you would like to see instead. Maybe your route will be included in this collection of the 10 most beautiful routes in the Netherlands!
