RouteXpert Review
From Wulvergem, the smallest village in the municipality of Heuvelland, we leave for the French border. But first we drive past Dranouter. Folk lovers will immediately prick up their ears. What started on a small scale in 1974 in café De Zon, has since grown into an internationally known festival. Initially exclusively folk-oriented, but that changed later and the music genres became more varied. When leaving the folk village we pass a bronze statue of the flute player, which once again highlights Dranouter's musical background.

Just over the French border we turn right towards the Black Mountain, or the Mont Noir. On the right side a large bunker immediately catches the eye. This bunker was built by the French just before the Second World War to protect the nearby Bailleul. This border town had already suffered greatly during the First World War. This bunker can simply be visited.

Just over the top of the Black Mountain (Mont Noir) we turn into a small side street, which immediately offers a beautiful view of the Catsberg and the valley in between. Due to the slope it is not easy to stop and park the motorcycle somewhere safe.

Then it goes towards Terdeg(h)em at the foot of the Casselberg. This small municipality has a few old windmills and the church of Saint-Martin on its territory, but the most striking thing is the few half-timbered houses that have been preserved. It is a kind of open-air museum, because in this region they are the only ones of their kind. The local pub -Le Cromwell- is also a good opportunity to take a break and maybe taste the excellent Picon. Motorcyclists are more than welcome there.

Finally we reach our destination Bergues or as in the old days, when the fortified city still belonged to Flanders, Sint-Winoksbergen. This is historically a very beautiful town, which was of great importance in these parts, but now seems to have fallen asleep. It is also its charm, the peace and the authentic beauty that it radiates. It is certainly worth spending some time there and discovering the many interesting places. Some are very easy to find, while others require some searching. Definitely visit the website for more information. The link is at the bottom.

When the cultural and other possible hungers are satisfied, we can continue. The next stop is again a place with a very grand past, namely Cassel.
The town of Kassel (Cassel), situated on the Kasselberg -176 m, is undoubtedly one of the most interesting places in French Flanders. In clear weather the view is magnificent. And everywhere you will find traces of history: the view from the top is unique, where you can still see the route of the Roman roads in the landscape! In Roman times it was a crossroads of 7 roads, which connected it to Tongeren and Tournai, among others. It still breathes history and several terraces on the Grote Markt invite you to have a drink and a bite to eat. The Musée de Flandre is certainly worth a visit for those who want to delve deeper into history. First check the website and your interest will probably be aroused. (link below). Pay attention in rainy weather, because the descent takes place on a cobblestone road, the description of which is 'bumpy and slippery' is quite appropriate.

Finally, the Mont de Cats (Katsberg) is climbed. The Katsberg is a witness hill in French Flanders and is over 150 metres high. (A witness hill, witness mountain or diestiaan hill, is a more or less isolated, erosion-resistant hill or hill complex in an otherwise relatively flat landscape, formed 55 to 35 million years ago). On the Katsberg there is an abbey and a 200-metre-high television mast. This makes this mountain a literally excellent point of reference, should you lose sight of "north",

We end where we started: Wulvergem. Except Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday you can still let this beautiful ride sink in in the cafe "In de Basseville"

24 Magnificent trails in France
It is clear that France is one of the most beautiful and best touring countries. It offers an incredibly varied landscape with good roads and a pleasant climate. It is not for nothing that you see so many motorcyclists there. My previous collection of 25 routes in France (25 Magnificent routes in France) were based on the route descriptions from the Motortourgids France part 1 made by Bert Loorbach.

This collection of 24 routes comes from Motortourgids France part 2. In this collection, a difference has been made between approach routes and motorcycle tours in a certain area. The approach routes can also be used in combination with the routes from Motortourgids France part 1

The routes are sometimes slightly adjusted based on the tips that Bert Loorbach gives in his description, or because of another place to spend the night, or to reach the minimum length of 2 hours for the MRA Library. For each route, the review contains a more detailed description, including options to stay overnight or places of interest along the way, which are also indicated with a POI and if possible with a short description.

Two or more routes have been created for a number of areas, such as for Burgundy, Auvergne, The Alps, Tarn and Cévennes and Nord-Pas de Calais. These routes can be nicely combined in a multi-day trip.
