RouteXpert Review
Imagine... You're in the southern reaches of the Low Countries, in an area of remarkable... almost sacred... serenity. The Brabant Kempen. For millennia, you've seen a landscape shaped by the tireless elements and the silent forces of nature. But there's something extraordinary about this region you're about to explore. A collection of eight settlements, deeply rooted in the barren sandy soil. They're called... the Eight Beatitudes. A name that sounds almost as mystical as the creatures you can see wandering the heathland in the early morning mist.

Your expedition begins in Eindhoven, at an international fast-food chain. A strange place to start, you might think, but essential for enjoying your first cup of coffee. You leave the ring road behind and drive along the south side of the airport towards Veldhoven Zoo. Once a sanctuary for parrots, it's now a safe haven for countless exotic flying creatures. Although no stop is planned here today, it's a reserve you should definitely visit.
Then you reach Wintelre. You'll hear the locals affectionately call it "Weintersel" in their own unique dialect. It's a fascinating adaptation of the language... a vocal signal of belonging. As you drive through the village, your eye is drawn to a neo-Gothic cruciform basilica: the Sint Willibrord Church. Built in 1901, it is, in the timeline of history, still a newborn. It was designed by Caspar Franssen, a student of the great Pierre Cuypers. Inside, you'll experience how the stained-glass windows filter the light in an almost... mystical way. The church is dedicated to Willibrord, whose influence you'll see as a recurring theme throughout this entire region.
Continue south to Vessem, the charming neighbor of Veldhoven and Eersel. Although small, you'll discover a surprisingly rich history here. You'll pass a beautiful protected village, with the Jacobuskerk (St. Jacob's Church) and a stone windmill from 1893 standing proudly over the land. Here, on the banks of the Kleine Beerze and the Buikheide woods, you'll find yourself in a true paradise for nature lovers.
Along the expansive farmlands, it's Knegsel and Steensel's turn. In Knegsel, you'll find a hidden gem with a turbulent past. In the 17th century, the original village was destroyed by plundering French troops. But here you can see the spirit of an indestructible community; they rebuilt their home a little further away. Only the lonely tower of an old barn church reminds you of that invasion. Later, you'll see the new church, dedicated to Monulphus and Gondulphus.
You continue your journey through the small Gender valley. A modest stream, yet vital to the landscape. It forms a fertile, green ribbon that contrasts sharply with the dry sandy ridges on which the villages you visit are built.
In Steensel, you'll see a remarkable remnant: the St. Lucia Church Tower. It stands alone, detached from its nave, like a beacon for you as a traveler. Near the old tower, you'll find a small chapel, still a place of contemplation for locals and passersby like you. Further afield lies Eersel, the undisputed gem of this ecosystem. Here, beneath the old linden trees in the Market Square, you can feel the human habitat come to rest.
A scenic drive through the Kempen region takes you into Belgium towards Postel. There you'll find the Norbertine Abbey, founded in 1183. Its white, Romanesque buildings exude a timeless tranquility. Today, you'll see that the abbey is a magnet not only for the mind but also for the stomach, thanks to the famous abbey cheese and the inevitable chip shops—always a wonderful destination for motorcyclists.
To the west, you cross the border again and reach Reusel. Here you can see how humans have defied natural boundaries. The fields near the Mierdes offer a view of an agricultural landscape in perfect harmony with the surrounding forests. The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption dominates the view here, a magnificent example of neo-Gothic architecture from the 19th century.
Via the Peels heathland, you return to the quieter links in the chain: Hulsel, Hooge- and Lage Mierde, and the expansive Netersel. Places where you can see the modern world briefly fade into the background. Through the Neterselse and Landschotsche heathlands, you reach the communities of Oost-, West-, and Middelbeers. You'll see how their history is linked to the Grote and Kleine Beerze streams, to which they owe their origins.
Finally, you'll visit Oirschot, the "Monumental Pearl." You'll ride through a historic center with over 300 monuments and a history of clog making. The village is dominated by the imposing St. Peter's Basilica and the characteristic white Church of the Assumption of Mary. The surrounding area offers expansive nature reserves such as the Oirschotse Heide and the Kampina, ideal for motorcyclists who appreciate this landscape. A stop at the air traffic spotting site is a must if you enjoy this sport.

The Heritage of the Kempen region. What you've seen here is more than a collection of villages. It's a testament to resilience and tradition. The Eight Beatitudes remind you that beauty often lies in simplicity and connection. As you watch the sun slowly sink below the horizon of the Kempen heathland, you leave the landscape in a peaceful silence. A bliss we must cherish... and protect.
Your ride ends at the Schippersstop, a well-known rest stop for your fellow motorcyclists. Enjoy your coffee there and chat about your day's adventures in this wonderful world.
