RIDERS Provincietour 1 Flevoland

Route Summary
This is a beautiful scenic drive through the Noordoostpolder and Flevoland.

It is especially recommended to drive from mid-April to early May, during the tulip season. Fields of blooming tulips, fresh green fields, and orchards alternate, making the route particularly attractive.

The exact tulip routes vary each year, as the tulips bloom on different plots each season. This route was largely driven in April 2025 and adjusted where necessary with information for 2026, gathered from various websites. Additionally, the routes can also be followed via the Tulip Festival signs.

The tour starts and ends in Lelystad, at the carpool parking lot along the A6. There are two petrol stations in the immediate vicinity to refuel beforehand, and a fuel stop is planned along the way after approximately 160 kilometers.

The total route is approximately 250 kilometers long and takes at least 8 to 10 hours, including breaks.
Enjoy the ride!

This route receives 4.5 stars due to the beautiful tulip fields when they are in bloom. Unfortunately, that is not the case all year round.

RouteXpert Review
A varied motorcycle ride through Flevoland and the Noordoostpolder.

The day begins early in the morning at the carpool lot along the A6 near Lelystad. For those who want to start off slowly, the McDonald's across the street offers the opportunity for a cup of coffee and breakfast before the engines start.

We drive via the Larserweg (N302) towards Harderwijk and turn left onto the Meerkoetenweg at the second traffic light. Soon we leave the city behind and drive past Lelystad Nature Park. Through the trees, the Swifterkamp Archaeological Open-Air Museum can be seen: a reconstructed prehistoric settlement with farmhouses, a hunter-gatherer hut, and outbuildings that provide a beautiful picture of life in Flevoland before the land reclamation.

The route continues winding through the Flevopolder. We zigzag past vast fields that, depending on the season, alternate with blooming tulip fields, orchards, and fresh green farmland. After the tunnel under the railway and the N307, the Robert Morris Observatory appears on the left. This remarkable work of art, designed by the American artist Robert Morris, was rebuilt in Flevoland in 1977. Those who wish can stop here briefly to view the observatory up close.

We cross the Ketelmeer via the Ketelbrug and leave Eastern Flevoland heading towards the Noordoostpolder. The bridge, over 800 meters long, offers a beautiful view of the water and literally marks the transition to a new landscape. From here, we drive through the Noordoostpolder, past characteristic villages and vast tulip fields. Along the way, we pass Nagele, Marknesse, Luttelgeest, Lemmer, Urk, Ketelhaven, and Dronten, among others.

Nagele is known for its distinctive modernist architecture. The village itself feels like an open-air museum, with the primary school by Aldo van Eyck, now a national monument, as the eye-catcher. Around Marknesse, agriculture and horticulture dominate the landscape; there are even vineyards here where surprisingly good wines are produced.

Luttelgeest presents itself as a true market gardening village. The many greenhouses surrounding the village define the landscape and supply products such as bell peppers, tomatoes, cherries, and flowers. An absolute must-see is Pantropica, voted the best day out in Flevoland by the ANWB for many years, featuring a butterfly garden, an Amazon rainforest, and an orchid nursery, among other attractions.

Flevoland is home to more than 450 shipwrecks on the former Zuiderzee seabed. One of them is the British merchant ship Queen Anne. The remaining frames now form a monument in the Schoterveld and show the contours of the ship. An ideal spot to stop for a moment and take photos.

We are driving north towards Lemmer. Those who wish can deviate via a waypoint to visit this charming Frisian watersports town, known for its historic centre, waterside terraces, the beach on the IJsselmeer, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site Woudagemaal.

Driving through colorful tulip fields, we pass Emmeloord, where refueling is possible, and continue on to Urk. Here, we plan a longer break for lunch. Pay close attention in the center of Urk; there are many one-way streets, and routes on Garmin, Tom Tom, and OSM may differ.

On the way to the Nieuwhaven, we pass various sights, such as the Urk Fishermen's Monument, the Urk lighthouse from 1844, and the oldest war monument in Flevoland at the Church by the Sea. These places tell the story of Urk: a community that lived from the sea, experiencing both prosperity and loss.
We park the motorcycles at the Nieuwhaven and enjoy lunch in one of the many restaurants.

Afterwards, we leave the Noordoostpolder again via the Ketelbrug and drive along the Ketelmeer towards Ketelhaven, with sweeping views over the water and countless boats on fine days. In Ketelhaven, we cross the Ketelsluis, a technically impressive structure that bridges the difference in elevation between bodies of water.

Via Dronten, we drive back to Lelystad, passing Bataviastad. Those with energy left can visit the Batavia Shipyard and the Maritime Museum here, or do some shopping. We continue driving along the Batavia Harbour, past the Wortman Pumping Station and the Northern Lock, and reach Lelystad Harbour.

The route continues along the Knardijk, with stunning views on either side over recreational lake Het Bovenwater and the Oostvaardersplassen. This vast nature reserve, part of Nieuw Land National Park, is home to a rich variety of birds and large grazers and reveals a different side of itself in every season.

We return to Lelystad via the Torenvlakweg and end the ride where we started. Here, there is plenty of opportunity to relax together with a bite to eat and a drink at the Van der Valk Hotel, McDonald's, or KFC — a perfect conclusion to a varied and relaxed motorcycle ride.

About this region
Flevoland (Dutch: [ˈfleːvoːlɑnt] (listen)) is the 12th and youngest province of the Netherlands, established in 1986, when the Southern and Eastern Flevopolders, together with the Noordoostpolder were merged into one provincial entity. It is in the centre of the country in the former Zuiderzee, which was turned into the freshwater IJsselmeer by the closure of the Afsluitdijk in 1932. Almost all of the land belonging to Flevoland was reclaimed in the 1950s and 1960s while splitting the Markermeer and Bordering lakes from the IJsselmeer. As to dry land, it is the smallest province of the Netherlands at 1,412 km2 (545 sq mi), but not gross land as that includes much of the waters of the fresh water lakes (meres) mentioned. The province has a population of 423,021 as of January 2020 and consists of six municipalities. Its capital is Lelystad and its most populous city is Almere.
Flevoland is bordered in the extreme north by Friesland, in the northeast by Overijssel, and in the northwest by the lakes Markermeer and IJsselmeer. In the southeast, the province borders on Gelderland, and in the southwest on Utrecht and North Holland.

The 10 most beautiful car and motorcycle routes in Friesland
Friesland officially, Frisian: Fryslân is a province in the north of the Netherlands. Friesland had 660,560 inhabitants in 2018. The capital is Leeuwarden. In addition to Dutch, Frisian has the status of administrative language in the province. But who does not know Friesland from the Elfstedentocht? An unparalleled skating festival, unfortunately it has been a long time since the last Elfsteden tour was held in Friesland, January 4, 1997 to be precise.

Not only your own language and a skating tour along the 11 Frisian cities, but also a very beautiful province to tour by car or motorcycle and enjoy all the beauty that the province of Friesland has to offer. For this purpose, a MyRoute app RouteXpert has compiled a Top 10 of Car and Motorcycle routes for you.

All routes in this collection have been checked and made equal for TomTom, Garmin and MyRoute-app Navigation by a MyRoute-app RouteXpert.
