RouteXpert Review
Our route starts from the Roadhouse Classics. This biker café is located along the Zolder-Terlaemen circuit. Which makes it easily accessible via the E314 motorway.

Then this route takes us through the Kempens coal basin. In this area in the Belgian province of Limburg coal was discovered in 1901. The exploitation took place in seven Kempense mining seats.

First we will enter the coal mine of Beringen. This mine was in production from 1922 to 1989. Today the mine site has been renamed B-Mine with shops and catering businesses. Remains of the coal mine, such as the shaft blocks and coal laundry are still visible. There are 2 terrils next to the mine site. Terril 2 is accessible and has no top but a plateau at a height of 100 meters. Terril 1 was transformed into Adventure Mountain.

Via the Terril van Zolder, which has been renamed a nature park with a beautiful view of the surroundings, we arrive at the coal mine of Zolder. This mine produced from 1930 and is the last mine that closed on September 30, 1992. The mine is merged with the coal mine of Houthalen which next crosses our path.

Via Zwartberg, where once the coal mine Les Liégeois was located, we arrive at the coal mine André Dumont in Waterschei, this mine was in production from 1924 to 1987. Today the renovated mining building serves as an incubator for the science park Thorpark.

On the way we stop at the station of As. This station is located on the disused railway line 21A-21B Eisden-As-Waterschei. From 1921 this station was the start station of the coal trains. In 1989, the railway lines were officially taken out of service and reserved for tourist exploitation.

Next we pass the Limburg-Maas coal mine in Eisden, production from 1923 to 1987. Today, the main entrance of the Hoge Kempen national park is here.
Via the garden district of Eisden or Eisden cité we return to Genk where we visit the coal mine of Winterslag in Winterslag (production from 1917 to 1988). Today this mine is better known as C-mine.

To finish our route we do a few nice turns and we drive through the Park Midden Limburg to arrive at our final destination. The open air museum of Bokrijk.

This route is a nice change of culture and history. There are many sights on the way. Many of the former mining buildings have been renovated and are being used today for recreational or cultural purposes. Both in Beringen and in Waterschei there is a mining museum that you can visit.

About this region
Limburg (, Dutch pronunciation: [ˈlɪmbʏr(ə)x] (listen); Dutch: Limburg; Limburgish: Limburg; French: Limbourg) is a province in Belgium. It is the easternmost of the five Dutch-speaking provinces that together form the Region of Flanders, one of the three main political and cultural sub-divisions of modern Belgium.
Limburg is located west of the Meuse (Dutch: Maas), which separates it from the similarly-named Dutch province of Limburg. To the south it also shares a border with the French-speaking province of Liège, with which it also has historical ties. To the north and west are the old territories of the Duchy of Brabant. Today these are the Flemish provinces of Flemish Brabant and Antwerp to the west, and the Dutch province of North Brabant to the north.
The province of Limburg has an area of 2,427 km2 (937 sq mi) which comprises three arrondissements (arrondissementen in Dutch) containing 44 municipalities. Among these municipalities are the current capital Hasselt, Sint-Truiden, Genk, and Tongeren, the only Roman city in the province, and regarded as the oldest city of Belgium. As of January 2019, Limburg has a population of 874,048.The municipality of Voeren is geographically detached from Limburg and the rest of Flanders, with the Netherlands to the north and the Walloon province of Liège to the south. This municipality was established by the municipal reform of 1977 and on 1 January 2008 with its six villages had a total population of 4,207. Its total area is 50.63 km2 (19.55 sq mi).
