The route starts and ends in Armação de Pêra, a charming little town about 50 km from Faro. Originally a fishing village, its beautiful beaches have made it a popular tourist destination. This makes a great base for exploring the Algarve. You can drive to Portugal yourself or have your motorcycle transported. If you don't have a motorcycle, there are two nearby businesses that rent motorcycles and quad bikes. Links are included in the review.
We leave the campsite and drive quietly out of town towards Loulé, the first town where we also stop to stretch our legs and enjoy a typical Portuguese town.
The next town is São Brás de Alportel, where you can also stop for a stroll. São Brás de Alportel is a calm and peaceful town with hospitable people. The church's bell tower rises among the streets lined with white houses. The town is surrounded on all sides by several hills. The low, white houses have popular architectural features, and there are also buildings adorned with tiled panels, natural stone, and iron verandas, reflecting the prosperity of the cork industrialists of yesteryear. A stroll through the streets and squares is a walk through the development of São Brás de Alportel, whose small details, such as the Baroque decoration of the Passo da Paixão, near the Episcopal Palace (Paço Episcopal), and the flowers in the windows, give it a characteristic Algarve character.
We stop at a small waterfall and a lake called "Pego do Inferno," definitely worth a detour to explore, or a refreshing dip. It's one of three waterfalls formed by the Asseca stream.
The next 130 kilometers take you along winding roads through the rugged Algarve landscape. A true pleasure for any motorcyclist, thanks to the beautiful curves, climbs, and descents. Along the way, you'll see several stunning vistas and plenty of places to stop for photos.
We drive around the Beliche reservoir and over the dam, and are also relatively close to the Spanish border. Via the pretty Portuguese villages of Alta Mora, Cachopo, and Ameixial, we arrive at the small Fonte de Benemola nature reserve. This park boasts a natural spring that continues to flow even in the hottest and driest weather in the Algarve, and this beautiful spot still boasts lush vegetation along the riverbanks when the rest of the landscape is brown and dry. A gentle walk, with time for photos, takes about an hour and a half.
The next natural park, Rocha de Pena, is just 5 kilometers from Fonte de Benemola, and offers beautiful hikes. At the summit, you'll have stunning views.
Lunch is planned in São Bartolomeu de Messines. This town has several cafés and a small museum, the "Museu do Traje e das Tradições" (Tradition and Costume Museum), on the outskirts of town. This Museum of Costume and Traditions is housed in a typical Algarve rural house, which has been specially restored for this purpose.
In the last part of this ride we pass the Arado reservoir, where it is definitely worth stopping for a short walk and to take some photos.
