RouteXpert Review
Leave the daily hustle and bustle behind and dive into a world of space and fresh sea air. The Lauwersland route is a journey of discovery through the north of Friesland and Groningen, along dikes, fishing ports and nature reserves. Here, every kilometre feels like a mini-adventure, with the Lauwersmeer as the beating heart of the route. You ride along the Wadden Sea, over winding roads and through villages where time seems to stand still. This is pure motorcycling, with endless views and perfect bends.

You start this route at The Point in Buitenpost, a centrally located point that quickly leads you into the tranquility of the Frisian countryside. The first kilometers take you through Kollum and Ingwierrum, where the landscape opens up and the horizon is wide. You immediately feel that this is a route to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Along winding roads you reach the northern coastal area and arrive at Moddergat, a historic fishing village that still bears the traces of the great storm disaster of 1883. Here you can make a short stop at 't Fiskershúske, a museum that shows the rough fishing life of the past. The route follows the coastline and takes you via Lauwersoog to the beautiful Lauwersmeer National Park. This nature reserve, once an inlet of the Wadden Sea, is now a paradise for birds and nature lovers. Motorcyclists enjoy the long, winding roads and the impressive views over the water.
After Lauwersoog you dive into the province of Groningen and arrive in Zoutkamp, a characterful fishing village with a rich maritime history. A visit to the Fisheries Museum is recommended, where you can learn more about the transformation of the area after the Lauwerszee was closed off. The smell of freshly smoked fish still hangs in the air here. The route continues through the Groningen countryside, via Leens, Pieterburen and Eenrum, where you experience the tranquility of the Hogeland. The roads here are a pleasure to drive: long straight stretches alternate with beautiful bends and small villages where time seems to stand still.
Slowly you turn back towards Friesland and pass Burum and Warfstermolen. Here you feel the transition from the Groningen clay landscape to the Frisian wide polders. With the last kilometers in sight you drive relaxed back to Buitenpost, where you can end the day with a well-deserved drink.

The Lauwerslandroute is a beautiful ride through an area where water, nature and history come together. With approximately 170 kilometers of relaxed driving pleasure and impressive views, this is a route that you will want to ride again and again. The combination of dikes, fishing villages and nature makes this tour perfect for those who want to experience Friesland and Groningen in all their purity.
