Route Summary
Mallorca is the largest island of the Balearic archipelago and is known for its lively seaside resorts with long boulevards, rugged hinterland and picturesque old towns.
This route runs from Portal Nous across the northern part of the island, largely through the Serra de Tramuntana. The ultimate goal is Far de Formentor, the lighthouse at the northernmost point of the island.
Through beautiful winding roads that offer you a beautiful view of the island and the surrounding Mediterranean Sea, you can enjoy all the beauty that this island has to offer.
Because of the beautiful surroundings, the equally beautiful roads and the nice sights, I rate this route with 5 stars.

RouteXpert Review
Mallorca is one of the most popular sun destinations in Europe. The white sandy beaches with overhanging palm trees, immense limestone rocks and the crystal clear sea attract many sun worshipers every year. But a holiday on Mallorca has more to offer than sun, sea and beach: beautiful sights and wonderful motorcycling on the many kilometers of beautifully constructed roads! Moreover, it is only a 2.5 hour flight from the Netherlands and there is no time difference!

The route starts in Portals Nous, just southwest of Palma de Mallorca. The first kilometers run along the boulevard of Palma, where you have a beautiful view of the pleasure yachts and the sea.
At Cala Major you have a view of two towers, one on each side of the entrance to the port. These are the Torre de Paraires and the Torre de Portopí. These two towers are the only two examples of coastal towers. In earlier times a chain was stretched between these two towers to block the entrance to the harbor for unwanted ships.

After about 12 kilometers you leave the boulevard and drive inland, you will soon find yourself among the olive trees. Via nice small roads you will come across the first break spot on the left in Moscari, time for a cup of coffee!

A few kilometers after the break you will find Ses Fonts Ufanes on the left. This is an attraction that you can only visit in certain weather conditions. Heavy rainfall in the Tramuntana Mountains is a prerequisite for the appearance of this spectacular natural phenomenon.
In the rainy season in autumn (and winter) you have the opportunity to marvel at a dramatic natural phenomenon on the north coast of Mallorca. After heavy rainfall in the Tramuntana Mountains, thousands of cubic meters of water gushes out of the ground in a holm oak forest in the Campanet district. This natural phenomenon arises out of nowhere and the dry soil of the small grove quickly turns into a deluge. Nothing would betray the existence of the bubbling springs of water in the dry summer months.
Depending on the amount of precipitation that has fallen recently, between 3,000 and 100,000 cubic meters of water can spray out of the ground per second. Barely noticeable, at first small niches soon fill with water, which in no time develops into a roaring stream rushing down the mountain.
Ses Fonts Ufanes was declared a natural monument in 2001. A tour has already been created for visitors. The holm oak forest is freely accessible and offers an unobstructed view of this attraction in many places. The origin of this natural phenomenon is explained by researchers with an impermeable layer of clay just below the surface, which prevents water from seeping away. After heavy rainfall, the soil can no longer absorb the moisture and the water penetrates to the surface.
In itself a beautiful natural phenomenon, you just have to be 'lucky' that there has been a lot of rain. Whether we as motorcyclists are waiting for that...

On the other side of the road you will find the Coves de Campanet, or caves. These caves have an area of 3200 m² and a walking route of almost 500 m. The visit goes through several galleries and spacious rooms. They are located on the hill of Sant Miquel - on the Serra de Tramuntana - in the north of Mallorca. It is a privileged valley that preserves the charm of the island's rural landscape.
The caves are notable for the delicacy and exuberance of their limestone deposits in the form of stalactites and stalagmites, also called speleothems by geologists. In addition to the rich natural ornamentation, several aspects have also attracted the attention of scientists and naturalists. For example, during the conditioning work on the caves, there were fossilized remains of Myotragus balearicus, a bovine species found only in Majorca and Menorca. With the arrival of humans on these islands, they became extinct about 4000 years ago.

After the underground spectacle you continue towards the Formentor peninsula, where you will see the lighthouse. Once you have arrived on the peninsula, it is teeming with viewpoints that offer you a beautiful view of the peninsula and the Mediterranean Sea. Don't forget to stop at one or more of these great places to take photos to remember.

The road to Cap de Formentor was built in the 1960s by the Italian Antonio Paretti, this road is known for its beautiful views, steep slopes, and the many winding roads. At the end of the road is the lighthouse, which was opened in 1863. Next to the lighthouse is a bar with a terrace, where you can once again enjoy the beautiful view. Fumart is the highest point of Cap de Formentor, this point is 384 meters above sea level. The road to Cap de Formentor is also frequented by cyclists. Keep this in mind!

On the way back you turn left at some point towards Talaia d'Albercutx. Perched at 380m, this late 16th or early 17th century watchtower was one of the main points of vigilance against the constant threat of privateering.
Located 380 meters above sea level, the Talaia d'Albercutx is part of the system of fortified and armed towers built on the island between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century.

After this literal highlight, you will hardly see a straight piece of asphalt for 60 kilometers! You have not yet passed one corner or the next one is already present, great! Don't forget to stop on the side of the road every now and then on this beautiful stretch to enjoy all the beauty that is offered to you.
After a long descent of 13 kilometers you arrive in Sóller. At the roundabout you can still choose to turn right and drive to Port de Sóller to see the great bay there. It's about 4 miles away, but it's definitely worth it.

After Sóller, on your way back to Palma de Mallorca, you have the choice to go through the tunnel or to drive 'above' via the many tight hairpin bends. Through the tunnel (toll-free since 2017) you save about half an hour, but the top is of course much nicer. After the tunnel you will pass a gas station where you can fill up the tank.

You continue the route towards Portals Nous, where you also started the route. Settle down on one of the many terraces for a nice beer, you deserve it after so many bends!

Have fun driving this route!

About this region
Mallorca, or Majorca, is the largest island in the Balearic Islands, which are part of Spain, and the seventh largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.
The capital of the island, Palma, is also the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. The Balearic Islands have been an autonomous region of Spain since 1983. There are two small islands off the coast of Mallorca: Cabrera (southeast of Palma) and Dragonera (west of Palma). The anthem of Mallorca is "La Balanguera".
Like the other Balearic Islands of Menorca, Ibiza, and Formentera, the island is an extremely popular holiday destination, particularly for tourists from the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom. The international airport, Palma de Mallorca Airport, is one of the busiest in Spain; it was used by 28 million passengers in 2017, with use increasing every year since 2012.

Exploring the magnificent roads of Mallorca
Mallorca is one of the most popular sun destinations in Europe. The white sandy beaches with overhanging palm trees, immense limestone rocks and the crystal clear sea attract many sun worshipers every year. But a holiday in Mallorca has more to offer than sun, sea and beach: Beautiful sights and wonderful motorcycling on the many kilometers of beautifully landscaped roads! Moreover, it is only a 2.5-hour flight from the Netherlands and there is no time difference!

These four routes give you an impression of how beautiful Mallorca is. You will explore the Serra de Tramuntana in all its beauty and tranquility with its many beautiful views. There are plenty of great restaurants along the way where you can enjoy a well-deserved break on the terrace.

These four routes are great for a long weekend or midweek break, great for a few days away. There are several providers where you can rent a motorcycle, you can even explore Mallorca on a Royal Enfiel Himalayan, how fun is that?

A few sights are discussed per route in the review. These often tell something about the history of the area in which you play. Fun facts, okay. You are completely free to visit these sights, you can of course also choose your own points of interest.
But it is a great thing that you probably traveled to this area for, the great driving and the beautiful weather. And as mentioned above, you are in a true motorcycle paradise where steering is fantastic!
