Route 5:
This route from Sivas to Erzincan blends open highlands with one of Anatolia’s most impressive geological features the Dark Canyon. Riders can enter the canyon via its unpaved section for a close encounter with its towering cliffs or choose the paved Bağıstaş Bridge alternative, which follows the opposite bank of the Euphrates while preserving the dramatic views. A riverside restaurant marks the canyon’s exit, offering lunch and optional boat tours. After a stop in Kemah and the second fuel stop you are closer to final destination, entering in the city take a look at your right to see Piri Sami Hazretleri Türbesi before the day ends in Erzincan with time to explore its main sights.

RouteXpert Review
Leaving Sivas in the morning, the ride eases into wide, open highlands where the air feels dry and the horizons seem endless. A quick fuel stop before Divriği sets you up for the day. The first notable pause comes at the entrance of Kangal, marked by the large statue of the region’s famous shepherd dog. It’s a simple but meaningful early photo stop, a reminder of the area’s proud rural identity.

Continuing toward Adatepe, the scenery grows more rugged and the landscape tightens. Just before the village, the road offers a decisive choice. If you turn right, you enter the legendary Dark Canyon, an unpaved yet manageable stretch carved by the Euphrates. The gravel may demand more focus, but the reward is immediate: vertical cliffs rising on both sides, deep shadows, echoing silence, and raw geological power. It’s the kind of place that forces you to stop, breathe, and photograph. The canyon gradually widens toward its exit, where a small riverside restaurant offers either a relaxed coffee or a proper lunch. A short river cruise is also available here, showing the canyon from below and emphasizing the immense scale of the rock walls.

For riders who prefer to avoid the unpaved section, the alternative is straightforward. Instead of turning right before Adatepe, continue straight to Bağıstaş Bridge, a narrow but easy-to-cross span over the Euphrates. After crossing, follow the opposite bank toward the canyon’s far side. This paved route still delivers excellent canyon views and reconnects naturally with the main road after the unpaved segment. It’s a smooth deviation that preserves the scenery without the gravel.

After rejoining, the way flows toward Kemah, where a short coffee break fits well with the rhythm of the day. Just after the town comes your second fuel stop, necessary before entering the longer rural stretch toward Erzincan. The road here passes near a military base, so a brief roadside check is possible, but it’s routine and rarely delays the journey.

Before Erzincan, watch for Piri Sami Hazretleri Türbesi on the right. This historic and spiritual site dedicated to a revered scholar stands quietly above the surrounding landscape, offering a moment of reflection before the final kilometers.

Arriving in Erzincan, the city spreads across a broad valley backed by sharp mountain ridges.
After checking into your hotel, the late afternoon is perfect for exploring the city center, the Erzincan City Museum if it is open and the century-old Erzincan Railway Station, a fine piece of early Turkish architecture. Copper workshops and sweet shops in the bazaar area complete the experience, giving you a gentle introduction to the city’s cultural character.
